PRESS RELEASE
Monday, 19th August 2024

The increase in crime and violence in Antigua and Barbuda has become a pressing concern for both residents and authorities. Over recent years, the community has witnessed a disturbing rise in incidents ranging from theft and gang-related activities to more serious violent crimes. This trend has not only affected public safety but has also impacted the overall sense of security among families and businesses.

Several factors may have contributed to this rise. Economic challenges, limited job opportunities, and social issues often play a significant role in fostering an environment where crime can thrive. Additionally, the influence of gangs and drug-related activities has exacerbated the situation, leading to conflicts and a cycle of violence.

In response to this crisis, the government has announced initiatives aimed at enhancing law enforcement capabilities, including increased funding and personnel resources. However, many community leaders emphasize the importance of a holistic approach that includes social programs, educational opportunities, and community engagement to address the root causes of crime.

We urge all Christian denominations and churches to come together in earnest prayer, seeking God’s intervention. Let us collectively repent and intercede for His divine mercy over our nation.

As a church, we are called to be the prophetic voice amidst the rising tide of violence in our community. In times of despair, it is our duty to preach messages of hope, help, and healing.

We must remind our congregations and the wider community that there is always hope, even in the darkest moments. Through our faith and collective efforts, we can inspire change and encourage a spirit of resilience.

In addition to sharing hope, we need to offer tangible help. This includes supporting local initiatives, providing resources for those in need, and engaging in outreach programs that address the root causes of violence.

Finally, we must focus on healing—both for individuals affected by violence and for our community as a whole. Through prayer, counseling, and community support, we can facilitate emotional and spiritual healing.

Together, let us stand firm as agents of change, advocating for peace and unity while fostering a culture of love and compassion. Let our voices be a beacon of light in these challenging times. Remember, “do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

  1. So it took murders of young people to speak out. So long gangs and legalized Marijuana use and you heard nothing. The Christian Council is only speaking because the government is speaking. It’s like a marriage with these two.

  2. Isn’t strange now that the Prime Minister Gaston Browne has acknowledged that there is a major problem with crime in Antigua, that other bodies are now jumping on the bandwagon.

Was it because the church didn’t want to upset this government by highlighting what normal Antiguans have been saying for a few years now about the tidal waves of crime?

Because if the church did speak out years ago, Prime Minister Browne would have told church bodies like the Antiguan Christian Council to mind their own business, and deal with saving their flock. Fact!

However, it wasn’t only the church authorities that were scared to speak out about the rise in rapes, gun crimes and burglaries, the other so-called pillars of our society stayed eerily silent.

OH, BUT IT’S ALRIGHT TO VOICE YOUR OPINIONS BECAUSE THE PM HAS “NOW” SPOKEN …

The churches historical background on delays to do the right thing and appeasement to evil regimes is still an issue today.

Next time don’t wait so long to speak out like the rest of concerned Antiguans.

  3. The Christian council is very selective on matters in our country, our collection is there main concern smh

  4. I need to see the Cristian Council in a mammoth march up Market Street to show their outrage against the crime situation in the country and not just engaging in sermons from the pulpit.

  5. What the church should be more worried about and speak more upon, is “Acts 21.21”.

That has more to do with what’s happening in Antigua and around the world, than the so called economic hardship that they are eluding to.

Antigua is bringing in,and making a lot of money, so we only have economic hardship because the Government we have in place is looting the people’s money.

Move this corrupt government and usher in a more honest one, and I guarantee you the so-called economic hardship wouldn’t be blamed for crimes.

The church is full of hypocrisy of this matter.

  6. By now you preachers would have heard of Senator Dwayne George claiming to “assist” a friend concerning a package which turned out to have an illegal substance? Right, so zoom in a bit; we are right away getting closer to the problem.

  7. Unfortunately, there seems to be a paradigm shifts within our communities. The voice of the church is not making that impact as years gone by.

Our society has become so self centered & immoral, hearing the voice of the church means nothing much these days

The doors of our churches are opened daily. Christians have gone around witnessing day & night, yet our churches remain empty. Why?

Sad to say, our churches are only recognize when it is a wedding or a funeral…..

  8. Just tell the truth like you sell it. It’s the period of the Super Moons the blue moons the full moons and the religious rituals which surround them and vice versa.
Some of these religious rituals still require human sacrifices and the spilling, drinking bathing in blood.
