The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expresses its profound gratitude for the posthumous pardon granted by the Biden administration to the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, a distinguished civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist leader, and National Hero of Jamaica.

This long-awaited exoneration is testament to the unwavering advocacy of CARICOM leaders, both individually and collectively, along with countless members of the diaspora, for the rectification of the unjust conviction of an ardent advocate for the rights and liberties of individuals of African descent.

CARICOM extends its heartfelt congratulations to his son, Julius Garvey, and other members of his family, as well as to the Government and People of Jamaica, and all who honor the remarkable legacy of this extraordinary son of our region.

His life and work continue to inspire and influence both within and beyond the Caribbean.Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP
Chairman, CARICOM
Prime Minister, Barbados

About CARICOM: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was established on 4 July 1973 with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, which was revised in 2001 to allow for the establishment of a single market and economy.

The Community comprises fifteen Member States and six Associate Members. It is home to approximately sixteen million citizens, 60% of whom are under 30 years old.

CARICOM rests on four main pillars: economic integration; foreign policy coordination; human and social development; and security cooperation.

Through the combined efforts to build a “Community for All”, it remains one of the best examples of integration in the developing world and is the oldest surviving integration movement. The CARICOM Secretariat, the principal administrative organ of the Community, is headquartered in Georgetown, Guyana.

  1. Yes, the entire Caribbean celebrates the wrong against the great son of the Caribbean Marcus Mosiah Garvey that has been finnaly put right. I was very disappointed that Obama did not see the need to grant the pardon before he demitted office.

  2. Savor that little drip of honey in Caricom’s mouth PM. Mottley. Most unfortunate that wasn’t accomplished under a President Clinton, or the President that Antigua and Barbuda placed honored to place his name on Boggy Peak. I saw foreign Minister Green bantering the weak UPP recently and advised him to save his energy for the Secretary of State in the Trump Administration Marco Rubio. Caricom must be strong and has a vision to develop the region. The Trump Administration with Marco Rubio will work to turn back the hands of time . The arcane foreign policy to keep Cuba depressed will continue, and watch out for involvement in Venezuela as it was in Grenada warranted or not. Caricom must brace itself. I have faith that PM Mottley will continue to advocate for the region. Will the male leader show they have testicles to stand with her? Time will tell.
