The Board of Directors and Executive Management of Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre acknowledge the recent industrial action taken by some of our dedicated staff members regarding the outstanding retroactive payment.
We fully understand the frustration this situation has created, and we sincerely apologize for any distress it has caused to both our staff and the patients we serve.
Prior to today’s action, the hospital communicated with all staff regarding the outstanding retroactive pay, stressing that resolving this matter was a top priority for the institution, and expressing gratitude for their patience throughout the process.
In that communication, we notified staff that, as part of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to honoring its agreement on salary adjustments, monthly allocations would be made available to facilitate payments for the retroactive amounts owed to eligible employees.
This retroactive payment stems from the Government’s decision to implement the remaining 9% of the previously agreed 14% salary increase for all public servants. The adjustment covers the period from January 1, 2018, to January 31, 2024.
In response to the concerns raised and after further review, a commitment was made to pay all eligible staff at once, and by the end of the week. We believe this approach will better address the needs of our staff and bring resolution to this matter more effectively.
While we regret the disruption caused by this industrial action, we remain committed to resolving this matter swiftly. The well-being of both our staff and the patients we serve is of paramount importance.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public.
Thank you for your continued trust and support.

Kudos to the healthcare workers
Retroactive Pay From January 2018 to January 2024. That is a damn shame and a disgrace. Why did they take so long to down their tools? If you do not get your money. All of you, just called in sick.
Bet the big increases that the government Secretly took and when questioned my the opposition MPs , tried to offer it to them as well. I can remember that the opposition MPs refused it. Are they getting it now.. Since they all say one thing and do the completely next thing . OH they got certain allowances as well – wardrobe, traveling, all their utilities are paid in full. They all get lands for popcorn. Then you know what’s worst? They only have to serve for two terms plus I think two years and they get full pension. When they don’t represent people well and they get voted out . They are appointed to the senate to make up the time. Hey Gaston did not give Lennox , Michael Brown no senate appointment because he doesn’t take too well to them. Samantha Marshall he gave the opportunity to serve in the senate to make up her time she is on full pension as well. Similarly the UPP did the same. Jackie Quinn was appointed to the senate to make up her time and Shaun Nicholas is on full pension from the senate as well.
So on these grounds I support and actions taken by the workers. Make sure that you all get all your money and everyone that is striking. The moment you stop strike because of promises they stop paying.
Heard teachers are sitting in as well for their upgrade. Well the teachers union had the experience to know not to go through the stop start business. The public will support you if you stand up for your money. However, we don’t accept that you broke your actions and go back to work and then stop again.
The government ministers also owns businesses and are collecting millions from the government for rent and services that include the top dog. So they know where their priorities are, to pay themselves of course.
Then they have special friends or accomplishes like Baba -black had that collecting millions from the treasury for over price contracts- no tender board, L Bothers and kool and Smoothie. The other contracts, services suppliers are catching hell. See what they do to Mr.Ryan and how the vilified him.
So make sure when you strike don’t stop , regardless of all the smooth talking that everyone of you get every cent before you call it off. This is not a political issue, it is your bread and butter. Most of you will die before you get pension anyway, so take what is yours now. Don’t matter which government is in power. In Antigua they all turn their backs on workers.
