The St. John’s Fire Station is relocating to Dredge Bay as preparations begin for the construction of a modern headquarters on Factory Road.

Attorney General and Public Safety Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin confirmed the move, noting that phone lines and other infrastructure were transferred earlier this week. He said Dredge Bay was chosen because it already has suitable buildings, parking, and storage for fire engines, making it a practical option.

Proposals to build a temporary station east of Factory Road were rejected as too costly and time-consuming, with Sir Steadroy stressing that Dredge Bay offered a quicker and more efficient solution.

The Factory Road station has served for more than 60 years but has faced repeated complaints, including mould problems that left several firefighters ill earlier this year. Sir Steadroy said the issue has persisted since 2004 and underscored the urgent need for a modern facility.

Construction of the new headquarters, financed through the Global Climate Fund, is expected to begin later this year and take about two years to complete.

  1. A new Fire Station for St. John’s is definitely needed and is long overdue. As a resident of POINT we are very happy to have them in our community. This is the third time that the Dredge Bay playing field is used to accommodate a government department that is undergoing construction. One can only hope that after the completion of this project that the playing field can be reverted back to its original purpose. From the look of things, it appears as if this playing field will be lost forever from the people of Point and converted to something else! Will we ever see football, cricket and other sporting activities held there again?
