Sports Minister Daryll Matthew has congratulated young sprinter Tyra Fenton following her standout performance at the CARIFTA Games, where she secured Antigua and Barbuda’s only two track and field medals so far.

Fenton opened her campaign with a bronze medal in the Under-17 girls’ 400 metres before returning to capture gold in the 100 metres, delivering a strong showing for the twin-island nation at the regional championships in Grenada.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Sports, I extend sincere congratulations to Tyra Fenton on her exceptional performance at the CARIFTA Games,” Matthew said in a statement.

He noted that her achievement reflects both discipline and determination, adding that her performance is “a truly commendable achievement that speaks to her dedication and excellence.”

Fenton’s double podium finish has positioned her as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s top young athletes, with her sprint victory highlighting her potential on the regional stage.

“The nation is proud of you,” Matthew added.

The CARIFTA Games, held at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium, continue to showcase emerging talent from across the Caribbean, with Antigua and Barbuda looking to build on Fenton’s success as the competition progresses.

  1. Am watching our athletes and for me I think the other Wadadli athletes needs to observe how Ms Fenton continues to give her all in every segment of her races. Competing in 1, 2, and 4m, is not easy, but just watch her overall performance, attitude, and just the way she carries herself, then try to emulate, cause this youth is all about winning.
She made a few errors in the 400m as the defending champion, knowing her fiercest rival Ms Thomas from the Bahamas was also in the race, going out too hard in a 400m is one, plus I didn’t like that outside lane choice, unable to see who’s coming up on her, but I guess her coach instructed her so to do.
A true Superstar in the making, Congratulations once again Ms Fenton. Now in the your 200m, it’s all about going hard and clean around that turn, then bringing it home.
Ms Henry was right there for a medal, with just a bit more push at the end, but i guess she didn’t want it that bad.

  2. Tyra’s performance is a big win not just for her, but for the entire nation. To step onto the regional stage and deliver our only two medals so far is no small feat. Antigua and Barbuda stands behind you, Tyra — keep shining and flying the flag high!
