General Manager of Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) Esworth Martin has addressed the issue of lights on the two highways — Friars Hill Road and Sir George Walter Highway — that have been recently rebuilt.
He said solar lights, evenly spaced, are planned for both highways.
Given the recent fatal accident on Friars Hill Road, the Cabinet held a discussion on discouraging drivers from speeding on those smooth surfaces.
It was determined that frequent use of radar-speed-tracking devices, utilized by the Traffic Police, will be employed to catch and to deter speedsters from using the pothole-free highways inappropriately.

I’m glad to hear the roads will be lit. But I have two suggestions.
The last set of solar panels that were installed, if memory serves, didn’t do well in hurricanes, so will that be addressed?
Also, what is noticed, is that when the roads are lit, it is the side of the road that are lit more, can it be possible to have the lights more centered over the roads to light the roads?
With respect to the speed guns, I don’t think that’s the most efficient way. The traffic department is already limited with man power. No way the police can be on the roads long enough, and at all times to deter speeding.
How about we invest in other method to complement the officers with their speed guns, such as speed cameras. You catch the vehicle and the plates.
The vehicle may be gone, but all the police has to do is go to the transport board, find the owner of the vehicle, then charge the owner, or the driver of the vehicle, for speeding.
Also with respect to road markings, it’s noticed that in no time the markings are gone. I’m thinking that we get some cat eyes for the roads. The different colors, of course, will give different instructions to the drivers.
I am making a plea that if it is the same set of lights that you find along she’ll beach (the white one) can the powers that be ensure the battery units are better secured so they are not removed by thieves.
When are the authorities going to get it right…? We advocate qualifications & certifications but yet still many, tend to lack the vision… It is uncomprehensible that things are put in place after the fact…. Come on guys, be proactive rather than being reactive… We are now living in the 21st century…… Let qualifications & certification work !!
Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! “The Afrocentrist seeks to demonstrate clarity by exposing dislocations, disorientations, and decenterness. One of the simplest ways of accessing textual clarity is through etymology. Myths tie all relationships together, whether personal or conceptual. It is the
Afrocentrist’s task to determine to what extent the myths of society are represented as being central to or marginal to society. This means that any textual analysis must involve the concrete realities of lived experiences, thus making historical experiences a key element in analytica Afrocentricity. In examining attitude, direction, and language the Afrocentrist is seeking to uncover the imagination of the author. What one seeks to do is to create an opportunity for the writer to show where he or she stands in relationship to the subject. Is the writer centered or is the writer marginalized within his own story?” – Dr Molefi Asante, Afrocentricity, The Theory of Social Change!
By Jove! You killed it! It must be repeated! “When are the authorities going to get it right…? We advocate qualifications & certifications but yet still many, tend to lack the vision… It is incomprehensible that things are put in place after the fact…. Come on guys, be proactive rather than being reactive… We are now living in the 21st century…… Let qualifications & certification work !!” Bluddy Bloke ANR 09202020!
That my Dear Brother is the Head Honcho speaking of a tactical correction of a minor problem halfway through the solution at the height of the hurricane season! There will be no “Brownie Points!”
Vision! Mission! Values! Strategy! Is it too much to ask the GM to direct the focus on VMVS!! As The GM it is expected that Strategic Thinking and Imperatives will be articulated for the closure of the Sorry A$$ Saga of the Wadadli Power Plant (BS&DS VMVS), The APC BOOT (Middle East Traders VMVS), The Water Harvesting, Storage and Distribution (TBA VMVS), The two Solar Power Farms (AM&Vird VMVS), The Wind Power Electricity Generation (RY&Cayman VMVS) and the Private Public Partnership (P3) for a LNG Electrical Generating Plant (GB&YID VMVS)! The Vendor at De Market say: Pay Attention!
“The Afrocentric method seeks to uncover the masks behind the rhetoric of power, privilege, and position in order to establish how principal myths create place. The method enthrones critical reflection that reveals the perception of monolithic power as nothing but the projection of a cadre of adventurers.” – Asante!
What the france are you saying?

Your Indulgence Please!
If you are unable to understand the first paragraph, kindly accept apologies for a NEGLECTED Education!
Paragraph Two is a repeat of a most brilliant Exposé by Bluddy Bloke on A&B’s Socio-Cultural, Educational and Technological Shared Values! His criticism should have guided you to use Critical Thinking to examine the INTERSECTION (you may wish to Read Dr. Carl James from Johnson’s Point thoughts and ideas on INTERSECTION) of ideas with actions and actions with ideas on the basis of what is pejorative and ineffective and what is creative and transformative at the political and economic levels! In the world through which Bluddy Bloke travels the General Manager would not only have had an audit conducted with a very deep dive into his stewardship – from his Strategy to Business Plan to Design/Build to Abandonment of the WPP – but most certainly his leadership would have been examined and he would have been relieved of his duties! Did you not follow the lack of responsibility and accountability from The Board, Minister and GoAB – they abdicated and hid shamefully – when the had the GM’s junior, The Electricity Business Unit Manager make the announcement to the People of A&B, The OECS, CARICOM and The World on a failed Strategic Imperative and the GM glowingly speaking to a small tactical operation improvement!
Paragraph Three addresses the failure of sound management practices and organizational quality improvement! CEO’s and GM’s are Champions of the Vision, Mission, Values and Strategy (VMVS note this acronym well!)of the Organization and hence GoAB’s Policies and Mandates! They do not focus on tactical operations! Such is left to the Electricity Business Unit Manager who is responsible and accountable for Operations!
An African Proverb is “Each One Teach One!” Paragraph Four is an exhortation to the People of African Descent to pay attention to the myriad of huge APUA Developments! You may wish to check out the WB’s warnings on the Development of such Projects in Developing Countries! In as much as they may be needed you should be very wary of the manner in which they have been brought to you! You have just heard the PM state that $190 Million was lost! That is $2million for every WoMan, Rasta and Child living on A&B! Were you engaged in developing The Vision, Mission, Values or Strategy (VMVS) or genesis of any of the past, present and future developments to realize the VMVS! Laid out for you is each Project with its known Champion(s) and associated VMVS! CUI BONO! The names have been “randomly generated” to protect this mere voice in the wilderness and ANR’s Legal Liabilities! Millions Lost and the People are left Poor Service! Have Mercy pon you! A little well known secret! Those Solar Power Plants are sitting idle while the Brit and German fishers continue to trawl in the Deep Blue Caribbean! VCBIA get its electricity from the Old Generating Power Plant at the Abandoned Naval Base! Go back to 2012, this mere voice offered advice on how to use the electrical capacity, prolong the plant’s useful life and generate savings without becoming Vird’s Opera Victims! Nuff Said!
Paragraph 5 is self-explanatory!
“Each generation must discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it, in relative opacity.” ― Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth!
Didn’t we have solar lights before? Didn’t someone steal all of the batteries without a single charge from the police? Antigua is a joke.
Let’s hope they install quality material that will last as well as secure everything to make it difficult for the would be thieves. Hopefully they put something in place that will electrocute would be theives.
