Smith Condemns Personal Attacks on His Family During Budget Debate

All Saints West MP and Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith used his Budget Debate presentation to denounce what he described as unwarranted personal attacks made against his family during recent political controversies.

Smith said the criticisms directed at his relatives had crossed an unacceptable line and urged MPs and the public to keep political disagreements focused on policy rather than individuals’ private lives.

Smith told Parliament that the commentary surrounding the duty-free controversy had escalated into personal territory, affecting not only him but members of his family who were not involved in political decisions.

He said the attacks had been hurtful and unjustified, arguing that public debate should not extend to people who have no role in government matters.

He maintained that while scrutiny of public officials is expected, there is a clear distinction between questioning a minister’s decisions and dragging his family into political disputes.

Smith said he chose to address the matter publicly because of the growing intensity of the personal commentary and the impact it has had beyond the political arena.

The minister also noted decline in the tone of public discussion, warning that political debate loses its value when it becomes personal rather than substantive.

He said disagreements should centre on governance, transparency and the work of ministers, not personal attacks that erode respect in public life.

Smith closed his remarks by reaffirming that his family should not be targeted for political criticism, and he called on colleagues across the aisle to help ensure that future debates remain focused on issues and facts rather than individuals.

People are still very upset at how you left them at the political alter, after the All Saints West by-election. What did you expect Roses?🌹🥀🌹🥀

You pooled deceiving votes from the electorate then deserted them for Gaston Browne, who in the past you’ve denigrated – we have the receipts as proof Mr Smith!

    Grow a pair man!!!

  4. So true @Norissa, so very true Anthony ‘Judas’ Smith has to live with his betrayal of the UPP voters in All Saints West.

He’ll look back over his political career and realise that integrity and honesty would have made him a politician that the UPP electorate could have trusted and very proud of.

A real shame this this episode will curtail his eventual and future prospects – it follow him whilst in politics.
