Small Craft Advisory Issued for Barbuda Waters

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a small craft advisory for Barbuda, warning mariners of hazardous seas on the island’s northern and northeastern coasts.

The advisory, which took effect at 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 September, will remain in force until tomorrow morning.

Forecaster Letitia Humphreys reported that east winds of 17–31 km/h (10–20 mph) are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h (31 mph). Seas are forecast at 1.5–2.1 metres (5–7 feet), occasionally rising to 3.1 metres (10 feet), with wind waves and swells reaching 2.1 metres (7 feet) or higher at periods of 6–9 seconds.

Risks to Mariners

Authorities have cautioned that the conditions pose significant threats, including:

  • Possible loss of life or injury at sea
  • Capsizing, damage, or loss of vessels and equipment
  • Disruptions to fishing and marine transport

Inexperienced mariners, particularly those operating small vessels, are strongly advised to avoid navigating in these conditions.
