The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a Small Craft Advisory for Antigua, warning of rough seas and strong winds expected to develop later on Sunday.
The advisory, issued at 2:20 p.m., also covers Montserrat and Nevis, but forecasters say the most hazardous conditions will occur off the eastern and southern coasts of Antigua, where waves could reach up to 3.7 metres (12 feet).
According to the Met Office, a strong tropical wave is responsible for moderate to strong easterly winds of 24–40 km/h (13–22 knots), with gusts up to 59 km/h (32 knots).
The advisory will remain in effect for Antigua and Montserrat from late this afternoon until midnight, and for Nevis from this evening until midnight.
Mariners are being warned of dangerous sea conditions, with risks including capsizing, damage to small vessels, and disruptions to fishing and transport activities.
“Inexperienced mariners, particularly those operating small craft, should avoid navigating in these conditions,” the Met Office advised.
