With more than 100 people employed during this phase of construction, there is no denying that something’s happening at Hodges Bay.
As it commences celebrations for its third year in office the Gaston Browne administration is likely to point to the resort at Hodges Bay as an achievement.
It’s by no means a new investment as the property existed before and investors have changed hands.
However, the resort was given a new lease on life after the Government listed it as one of the approved properties for the real estate option of the Citizenship by Investment Programme.
Since that time, no less than four opening dates have been given.
Today Brenton Henry visited the property and found that there is still some work to be done.
The new resort at Hodges Bay was actually due to be open in July 2015. Then we were told it would open in December of that same year.
When that did not happen an opening of late summer 2016 was announced.
We are now in 2017 and the government and hotel owners have not given precise timelines, only saying the property will be opened this year likely in October.
In total, the resort will have 79 premium accommodation options offering a total of 122 bedrooms. These range from oceanfront town homes and villas to executive suites and penthouses, many with outdoor Jacuzzis.
Last year, Elegant Hotels Group plc, the owner and operator of six upscale freehold hotels and a beachfront restaurant on the island of Barbados, announced that it signed a management contract with Hodges Bay Resort in Antigua.
The company has been advertising jobs in the press and dozens of construction workers can be seen on the property daily.
The estimated cost of construction is US$ 50 -70 million.
