On March 12, as the global community observes World Kidney Day and World Glaucoma Day, Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) is calling on the public to prioritize routine health screenings.
Both conditions are known as “silent” diseases because they often develop without noticeable symptoms until they have reached an advanced stage.
“Because kidney disease and glaucoma often progress quietly, many people don’t realize their health is at risk until complications are severe,” said SLBMC Medical Director, Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis.
“Early detection is the most powerful tool we have to improve health outcomes and prevent irreversible damage.”
The Silent Threat to Kidney Health
Kidney disease often develops gradually and is most commonly linked to chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
In 2026, World Kidney Day is observed under the theme “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People and Protecting the Planet.” SLBMC encourages individuals—particularly those living with hypertension or diabetes—to consult their healthcare providers for simple blood and urine tests to monitor kidney function.
The Silent Thief of Sight
Glaucoma is a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide and is frequently called the “silent thief of sight” because vision loss usually begins gradually in the periphery.
The 2026 theme, “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” underscores the necessity of regular eye examinations. Since the optic nerve damage caused by glaucoma is permanent, regular checkups are the only way to detect the disease early enough to protect remaining vision.
A Proactive Approach to Wellbeing
As part of its ongoing commitment to the health of Antigua and Barbuda, SLBMC urges everyone to remain proactive. Monitoring blood pressure, managing existing chronic conditions, and scheduling routine eye exams are simple but vital steps in protecting overall wellbeing.
