SLBMC Successfully Treats Diver for Decompression Sickness
The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has been praised for its swift response in treating 37-year-old diver Akeam Bretney, who suffered from decompression sickness, or “the bends.”
Thanks to the hospital’s hyperbaric chamber—donated by the Calvin Ayre Foundation—Bretney received immediate Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), avoiding the need for overseas treatment. He has since made a full recovery.
SLBMC thanked the Foundation for its support, noting that the equipment has strengthened their life-saving capabilities. Special recognition was given to Dr. Bienvenido Bridge, who led the medical team during the emergency.

The Calvin Ayre Foundation has done many wonders with these great donations. Without it, many stories could’ve ended very differently and left many families lost for words! It’s about time that they are recognized by the government for their hard work and dedication to saving lives and putting smiles on the face of many!
So relieved to hear a positive outcome. It’s easy to take these life-saving services for granted until you hear about them in action. Well done, SLBMC!
Yeah! Bravo to Calvin and that specialize doctor, it is now time to treat diabetic patient with cuts that won’t heal leading to amputation. This machine can save a limb, and also for burn patient and surgery healings.
