The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) celebrated World Health Day with a vibrant event focused on maternal and newborn health, emphasising the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”
Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, the hospital’s Medical Director, showcased SLBMC’s achievements in improving health outcomes for mothers and infants, including a neonatal mortality rate of 5.3 per 1,000 live births in 2023, well below the UN Sustainable Development Goals target.
Plans for further advancements include the launch of a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening program and a focus on supporting at-risk mothers through the High-Risk Antenatal Clinic.
Dr. Belle-Jarvis also announced a milestone of zero maternal deaths in 2024, crediting the hospital’s high-quality care and community support. SLBMC is also set to enhance its diagnostic services with new ultrasonography equipment and is upgrading its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Maternity Department.
These initiatives position SLBMC to lead in maternal and newborn care across Antigua and Barbuda.
