Antigua and Barbuda’s Darion Skerritt saw his 200m journey at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo come to an early end after calf discomfort prevented him from advancing to the finals.
Skerritt, who entered with a personal best of 20.67 seconds, was drawn in the sixth and final heat. Despite feeling tightness in his calf muscles during warm-ups, he opted to compete after experiencing some relief on the way to the call room.
Unfortunately, the pain resurfaced at the start of the race, forcing him to finish eighth.
The Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association has extended well wishes to Skerritt, expressing confidence in his return for the 2026 season.

How many times during these big events i.e Olympics and World athletics championship we get this from our track and field athletes? It’s as if we get scared after realizing the competition we’re up against.
Man after reading this story I had to go back and take another look, I guess since they didn’t introduce him or put his image on the screen like they did to the others I missed him. He was in the same heat as Tebogo and a BVI competitor who had a zoom in screen shot, but this heat to me didn’t look to be that challenging.
My conclusion is he should have just stayed in his hotel room, I got a vale image of someone in lane one, he went through the set count and after the gun that was it. Over the years I realize instead of saying last, we
seem more comfortable by going by the number of athletes in said race and make our decision, hence 8th place. Was really looking forward on seeing you compete, this was the luck of life time for any athlete to be given a free bye to compete on the world stage, but this wasn’t to be. I wanted to say next time but from the progress of our track and field here this offer may never return, although a wise coach would’ve come right out and absolutely say no go, since trying to run in a 200m race with a hamstring or calf muscle tightness is failure all around. Let’s hope you got some influence from watching the other athletes.
