SOURCE: ANTIGUA OBSERVER- Jamaica-based sprinter Darion Skerritt will be Antigua and Barbuda’s lone representative at this month’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Skerritt, who trains with Swept Track Club in Kingston, will compete in the 200 meters event at the September 13th to 21st championships after receiving a universality or wildcard slot. The 24-year-old athlete, with a personal best of 20.67, accepted the gift after it was turned down by senior national sprinter Cejhae Greene who is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Greene, who now trains in Jamaica, recently competed in the NACAC Senior Championships held in the Bahamas, clocking 10:35 seconds in semifinal 3 of the 100 meters event to bow out of the championships.
Antigua and Barbuda’s lone outright qualifier for the championships, women’s sprinter Joella Lloyd, also opted out due to a shin injury. Lloyd clocked 11.01 seconds in May this year which secured her qualification for the World Athletics Championships. This performance not only qualified her for the major international event but was also a new personal best and the new national record in the 100 meters.

Skerritt will be accompanied by coach Jamille Nelson who will also be the delegate to the 55th World Athletics Congress. President of the Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association (ABAA) Everton Cornelius will also attend the congress.

Everton Cornelius is still President of the ABAA??? Does.Skerritt really have anything to gain other than an expensive plane ride. Tired of the mediocrity.
Dont put too much pressure on yourself. Just go out there and do your best
We cannot blame the local athletes for the mediocrity that is the Athletic Association! What exactly is Cornelius going to impart on the youth who are trying, who has potential to be half decent because of their talent…. It’s too long for 1 man to be in charge of an organization that has offered nothing to the Athletes and this country!!! #Mano out
I’ve been preaching the Everton Cornelius mediocre running of our athletic association since the craziness that went down in the Rio Olympics, but I guess I was the only one that felt that way. I also remembered coming on here and criticizing him walking around like an emperor with hands in pocket at our last trials at Yasco, not forgetting the Big let down of our young athletes after training and preparing for so long just to be told no travel preparation was made, yet the man is still there traveling around world.
It’s 2025 and to this day we can’t find six athletes to represent us in the Olympics or World. I remembered a statement was made by Chet Green after the same Brazil Olympics, where instead of focusing on the track side, there are a lot of field events that can be more easily achieve so this will be our goal. Put your mind in reverse and look at the last Olympics and see if anything was improved. Our one female high jumper Ms Pricilla Frederick who gave us something to look at hang her shoe up and to this day no one has stepped up to the plate.
Every country without a team is given a bye and this is where a lucky unknown athlete to the world may shine, for Waddell Skeritt is ours and although his PB in the 200m is not as strong, anything and everything can happen so just give it your all and if you make it out your heats that on its own will be a great accomplishment since our superstars find it hard just to move on. Good luck.
Out of all the young talent in Antigua only 1???????????????????person to represent our beautiful island 🤦🏽♀️ good luck anyway
