Sir Ronald Sanders Receives Honorary Doctor of Laws from University of Guyana

Sir Ronald Michael Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS), was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by the University of Guyana during its 59th Convocation Ceremony on 22 November 2025.

The degree, conferred by Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin, recognized Sanders as one of the Caribbean’s most distinguished diplomats, celebrated for a lifetime of service to Guyana, the wider Caribbean, and the international community. The citation, read by senior lecturer Mr. R. Creighton (Mr. Arkwrighton), highlighted Sanders’ decades-long career marked by “principled advocacy, intellectual rigor and an unshaken belief in the value of international cooperation.”

The university praised Sanders’ pioneering rise in journalism—becoming General Manager of the Guyana Broadcasting Service at age 25—and his influential body of syndicated commentary on justice, governance and small-state diplomacy. His diplomatic achievements were underscored, including his unprecedented three terms chairing the OAS Permanent Council and his leadership of the 2016 Good Offices Mission to Haiti.

During the ceremony, the citation also noted Sanders’ unwavering defense of Guyana’s constitutional order, electoral integrity, and territorial sovereignty, including his advocacy on the Guyana–Venezuela border controversy. His global contributions have earned him honours from multiple nations, including the Order of Merit of Ukraine in 2025.

In his acceptance remarks, Sir Ronald expressed “deep humility and gratitude,” telling graduates that the moment represented “the first day of the rest of your lives… the day on which dreams step out of hope and into history.” He urged the class of 2025 to embrace unity, defend justice, and seize the unprecedented opportunities emerging in Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy.

Reflecting on Guyana’s growth, he said the nation stands “on the threshold of a transformation no previous generation has witnessed,” adding that the graduating class will help shape a future defined not just by resources, but by character, courage and national purpose.

Sir Ronald departed the ceremony to warm applause, with the university noting the significance of hosting one of the region’s most accomplished diplomats amid his demanding international schedule.
