The second person arrested and charged for the murder of Syrian businessman Roudi Shmaly six months ago has been remanded to His Majesty’s Prison.

Shmaly, 25, was gunned down inside his DeSouza Road business, Pick N Mix Mart, on May 22, 2023.

On Wednesday, November 22, the Police charged 24-year-old Jahsiba Shoy of Browne’s Avenue for the murder, as well as for robbery.

Shoy made his first appearance in the St. John’s Magistrates Court this morning, November 23; but, due to the nature of the charges, a magistrate has no jurisdiction to grant bail.

The Court has set February 14, 2024, as the date for his committal proceedings.

Based on information REAL News has received, police officers, including from the Criminal Investigation Department and the K-9 Unit, executed a search warrant at Shoy’s home at about 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21.

Reports say that Shoy was present during the search, along with another relative, but the Police found nothing of interest.

Shoy was then arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to the St. John’s Police Station for questioning.

Earlier, officers had arrested and charged a 16-year-old with the murder of the Syrian businessman; therefore, both young men are now jointly charged for committing the capital offence.

Reports say that officers had initially detained at least six people on suspicion of murder during the intense investigations that followed the killing.

Meanwhile, Shoy and the teen have been jointly charged for robbing Geraldine Laing of $987, an offence that occurred at Desouza Road on the same day of the murder.

  1. Hard working tax paying citizen dead because of these two. Both of them need to be killed. Instead they get a slap on the wrist, with a a few months in jail then let go before their time is up only to do the same thing again. Kill them and that’s a guaranty they will never kill again.

Hard working tax paying business owners have a hard time getting a gun license yet these young punks are getting illegal guns just like that.

Government has taken our rights away or at the very least made it extremely difficult and expensive to obtain a gun license. Police are not everywhere, they can’t find transportation to get to the scene and yet we are not allowed to defend ourselves.

This ignorance has got to end. Either stop the illegal guns from coming in and if you can’t then allow us the option of defending ourselves from these low life scum.

  2. To the person name Hard and expensive in light of what you are saying I don’t think you said what you said with a clear mind . The law state innocent until found guilty and as it stands the officers found nothing at this young man’s home out of an 100% of the people in 1735 80% are really innocent and the rest did the crime it’s sad to say that Antigua and Barbuda police don’t have the right equipment and training for the job and some are even doing the same crime. So please make it make sense?

  3. Remember this child who he was involved with the beating. That child was in a coma, Yet he was out and about like nobody’s business . I’m never amazed at some cases until there’s a DEATH…

  4. Meanwhile these youngsters are getting fined for possession of an illegal gun.
Tell me if that makes sense if you’re trying to stamp out gun crimes?

They are too busy knighting the AG than making a stance on the laws against illegal guns.

Just a joke all the way around by these leaders.

    • Says the idiot who living in a country were there is a mass shooting done be kids every other day. Parents are scared to send their kids to school cause they don’t know if they coming back home or they will be asked to go to come and identify a body. So stay where you are asswipe land of mass shootings and killing.

  5. The shop owners was brutally murdered whilst pursuing his lawful business. Antigua has a broken and corrupt police services, which falls under the administration of the recent Knighted AG that was responsible for gassing Antiguans for engaging in peaceful demonstrations.
Therefore, Antiguans should not be surprised by the wave of crime that has become an every day reality. The AG has done nothing,or offer effective solutions to stamp out the rising crime rate.

The two accused were involved in street robbery and allegedly went on to commit murder on a street in St John’s and I am not suggesting that murder is acceptable outside of St John’s.

I have said it here on numerous occasions Antiguans should be given the opportunity to debate the return of hanging for heinous crime. Murders and rapists must be made to expect swift and permanent consequences to their heinous crime.

  6. All I can say people with license firearm kill them bombocloth when them rob Aru any chance Aru get. Kill them cloth .. .until one lesson nah mek or something serious happen this nar go stop cuz them youth go feel like it’s okay to rob and rob again. Believe me jack.

  7. Handsome young man. Could have been a model or something. Too bad he turned to a life of crime. Everyone has some gift or talent they can use to make a living. Schools, Communities, Social Agencies etc. need to aggressively find ways to constantly communicate to young people the many legitimate ways to make a living out there, help them to become excited about earning a living and making a positive contribution to their society, and support them with advice and financial assistance as they try to make a start in life. Have tons of career expos, let them speak to guidance counselors, let them participate in small business programmes. They should not be thinking about crime so much.
