Rhoudi Shmaly, a victim of a fatal shooting at Pick N Mix Mart on Desouza Road, will be laid to rest today.
The Syrian community is expected to gather in large numbers to bid farewell to the 25-year-old, who managed the superette and Chicken Hub businesses.
The funeral will be held at The Marcilas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Blue Waters at 3 PM, followed by his burial at St. John’s Public Cemetery. Due to the complex and costly process of repatriation, Shmaly’s family decided to lay him to rest in Antigua.
On May 22, 2023, Shmaly valiantly confronted a gunman who entered the store.
Tragically, he was shot at close range and succumbed to his injuries upon reaching the hospital, becoming the first homicide victim in Antigua and Barbuda in 2023.
A 16-year-old suspect has been apprehended and charged with his murder. The minor is currently in custody at His Majesty’s Prison.
