House Speaker Sir Gerald Watt, QC, defended the behavior and performance of Antigua and Barbuda’s Parliament in a brief response to the recent Ombudsman report.

Addressing specific comments in the report, Sir Gerald expressed his dissatisfaction with remarks attributed to him by the Ombudsman, stating they were inaccurate.

“Two quick things, notwithstanding what the woman had to say. By the way, she said something I said, which I didn’t. Anytime I say something, I stand by it — been doing so since school. So, she lied on me, but I won’t bother to take her on. Let me say for the record: this Parliament is one of the better parliaments in the region and the world.”

Sir Gerald dismissed claims that the Antigua and Barbuda Parliament was poorly behaved, urging people to take a broader perspective. He compared the conduct of the local body to other parliaments, particularly the British Parliament, known for its often boisterous debates.

“We are not a badly behaved Parliament, and we must not allow people to tell us we are when we are not. Look at the British Parliament — more ‘back and forth’ goes on there. Why is it that black people always criticize black people?”

He further asserted that Caribbean parliaments, including Antigua and Barbuda’s, maintain a high standard of conduct compared to other legislative bodies worldwide. “Check us out, check our Caribbean parliaments — we are as well-behaved as parliaments go.”

The House Speaker emphasized that Parliament is not meant to be a place of gentle conversation, comparing it to the Senate and noting that robust discussions are part of its purpose. “Parliament is not a tea party; the House is the House, not the Senate.”

Sir Gerald also made it clear he had no intention of engaging further with the Ombudsman on this matter. “I’m not going to have any time to deal with the woman. She should mind her business, but nevertheless, you understand.”

  2. Look how the 1000 Watt bulb spinning and wheeling. The woman was right.
You’re supposed to be fair and unbiased, but you’re obviously the clowns footstool. Defending him, shielding him and giving the DAWG the advantage.
You’re pass your employable days Watts. Go to hell home. Spend the rest of your day in quiet reflection. Please. Antigua and Barbuda would be just fine without you.
My God! These fools want to die in office?
What a dispalicable place this country is under this government!

  3. I can agree with the Ombudsman, there are room for improvement despite him saying there are none. This is exactly why the country stay stagnant. Saying there are room for improvements and better people to them is an attack of them. It is time someone young take over the speakership. Someone who can be MORE fair.

  4. What a pity! Politics, disrespect and dishonour seem to permeate every aspect of life in Antigua. Comments so far suggest a blind loyalty to the original pig who has the additional qualification of being “younger” (not by much) than the current embattled “accused”. The outrageous conduct of the original pig of blatant partisan partiality, high-handed actions including arbitrary suspensions of opposition members and much more all went unquestioned and unchallenged by our useless ombudsman and seasonal critics alike.
It never ceases to amaze me how these “young” people so quickly point fingers at older citizens reminding them if their age, equating their age with uselessness. I shake my head in sad amazement and wonder how they view their own aging process.

  5. Adults have responsibilities to set rules and be a reflector of those rules. Part of the problem we have in Antigua and Barbuda is that adults and leaders talk but their actions runs contrary to what they talk about. There is very little level of respect shown to each other in Parliament and it is customary for members to openly disparage each other in Parliament, on radio stations and on social media.
Privilege and responsibility must go hand in hand. You can disagree with someone without the level of disrespect that we see coming out from even the Speaker of the House.
The ombudsman is a creature of the Constitutional. The Speakers reference to the Ombudsman as ” the woman ” was rude , offensive obnoxious, distasteful and embarrassing.

  6. Why are you folks surprised at Gerry’s behavior? If you all knew him there would not be any surprises. He has been that way.Since he lived with his parents and siblings on Fort Road/Anchorage Road.
