Prime Minister Gaston Browne has voiced strong concerns about the management of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), citing inefficiencies, service disruptions, and a lack of accountability.
Speaking during a recent discussion on Pointe FM, Browne described APUA as a significant challenge for his administration, particularly its Water Division.
Browne criticized APUA for its handling of water supply issues and delays in addressing service complaints.
“The greatest threat to my administration is not the opposition—it’s APUA, particularly the Water Division,” he said. He pointed out the slow response to water leaks and other issues, adding that such inefficiencies undermine public trust and create widespread frustration.
The Prime Minister also raised concerns about the agency’s focus on bureaucratic procedures rather than delivering practical solutions. “People need water in their pipes—KPIs and strategies mean nothing if basic services aren’t delivered,” Browne remarked.
Browne did not rule out the possibility that political affiliations within APUA could be contributing to service delays.
“It’s not inconceivable that some elements within APUA may be weaponizing the system against the government,” he said. While he stressed the need for further investigation, Browne called for vigilance and action to prevent any potential sabotage.
The Prime Minister called for stronger leadership at APUA, urging the replacement of individuals unable or unwilling to meet performance expectations.
“If they’re too tired and can’t get the job done, they need to move out of the way. If they don’t want to move voluntarily, I’ve said to the minister—move them,” he stated.
Browne also highlighted the need for urgency in addressing the utility’s challenges. “We cannot allow APUA to become the Achilles’ heel of this administration,” he said. “It’s time to ensure proper management and accountability.”
Despite the challenges, Browne reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving utility services and meeting the needs of citizens. “Our focus remains on resolving these issues and ensuring the people of Antigua and Barbuda receive the quality of service they deserve,” he concluded.

Why is it always sabotage? You must always find a scapegoat for Melford’s incompetence. Most people do not even believe that he truly won his seat

Just like how you took time to remove the GM, that is you now are taking time to remove the others who have been implicated. It is not a secret who they are. And the openly have defy your instruction. Somehow them who run things. The former GM brags how he is now better off, with his golden handshake.
And the rest are hoping for the same golden handshake.
