Sergeant Iyo Abina Malone-Merchant Laid to Rest in St John’s

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered today at the North Street Zion Church of God in St John’s to bid farewell to Sergeant Iyo Abina Malone-Merchant, a respected member of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.

Malone-Merchant, 46, was laid to rest following an emotional service that reflected the profound impact of her life and service. She died on 14 March after being found with a gunshot wound at Langford’s Police Station. Authorities later confirmed her death at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

Tributes poured in from across the island, with mourners remembering her as a dedicated officer and compassionate community member. Mental health advocacy groups, including the Wadadli Initiative for Self-care and Healing (WISH), used the occasion to call for urgent reforms and greater support for officers coping with stress and trauma.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing.
