Senator Shenella Govia Promises Dedication and Inclusivity as New Minister of State in Education, Sports, and Creative Industries

Senator Shenella Govia expressed her deep gratitude and commitment today after being sworn in as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Creative Industries.

Addressing her elevation, she thanked Prime Minister Gaston Browne and his cabinet for their trust, recognizing the journey she has taken since she began working alongside Browne when he was the Leader of the Opposition.

“For me, it’s truly an honor. I want to serve as a living example that no matter your gender or age, you can become anything you put your mind to,” Govia stated, acknowledging the support of her colleagues and the encouragement from family and well-wishers present.

In her new role, Govia emphasized her intention to inspire more women to step into leadership roles.

Recalling a message from a young woman who expressed admiration and curiosity about her journey, Govia encouraged women not to shy away from politics or leadership roles. “Leadership is not about gender or race but about passion, determination, and commitment,” she affirmed.

Govia highlighted her plans to focus on advancing programs within education, sports, and the creative industries. She pointed to an ongoing collaboration with Minister of Education Daryll Matthew, with whom she has a strong working relationship.

Together, they plan to enhance youth programs, including revitalizing the youth drama club, choir, and steel orchestra. She also hinted at the return of the DARE program, which aims to educate and empower youth, noting that there are ongoing discussions about its rebranding and future rollout.

In addition to her ministerial role, Govia is set to become the Leader of Government Business in the Senate. She voiced enthusiasm for the Senate’s often lively debates and expressed her commitment to fostering engaging discussions.

Inspired by former leader Samantha Marshall, she aims to bring her own passion and perspective to this new role, encouraging the public and students alike to engage with the legislative process.

As she embarks on this new chapter, Govia hopes to be a role model, particularly for young women, underscoring her belief that “if a guy can do it, we can do it too.”
