Senator Shawn Nicholas Announces Resignation from Senate After 11 Years of Service
Minority Leader Senator Shawn Nicholas has announced her resignation during what she described as her final sitting. The seasoned parliamentarian, who has served since 2013, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Antigua and Barbuda and reflected on her enriching journey in public service.
Senator Nicholas began by thanking former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, who first appointed her to the Senate, and Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle for reappointing her in 2018 and 2023. She acknowledged the confidence placed in her over the years, stating, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve this country in this capacity.”
She emphasized the importance of leadership renewal, advocating for opportunities for younger generations to take the reins. “While it is important to retain talent, it is equally vital to allow those we have trained to step forward and lead,” she remarked. Senator Nicholas credited her time in the Senate as personally enriching, adding that she hoped her contributions had positively impacted the nation.
Reflecting on her tenure, Senator Nicholas highlighted achievements, including her role in ensuring gender-sensitive legislation and pushing for the long-overdue review and approval of the Senate’s standing orders. She also underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing national issues, stating, “It’s about service to country, not about us as individuals.”
With mixed emotions, Senator Nicholas bid farewell to her Senate colleagues, expressing gratitude for their camaraderie and lively debates. She reserved special thanks for her family, friends, and supporters, acknowledging the sacrifices women make in political life. “For women, our day starts when we get home,” she said, recognizing the unique challenges faced by women in leadership.
Nicholas’s commitment to advocating for women, girls, and youth remains steadfast. She promised to remain an active supporter of causes close to her heart, despite stepping away from the Senate. “I may carry the title ‘former,’ but my service to Antigua and Barbuda is far from over,” she affirmed.
In closing, Senator Nicholas expressed her hope for unity, even across political divides, and reiterated her dedication to the nation’s progress. “Even though we may stand on different sides, we all want the best for Antigua and Barbuda. God bless this beautiful country,” she concluded.
Her resignation marks the end of an era for a leader who has been a prominent voice in the Senate for over a decade, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, advocacy, and service.
