Antigua and Barbuda’s booming fete scene is a clear reflection of the country’s thriving economy, according to Senator Shenella Govia.
During the Senate debate on the 2025 budget, Govia highlighted the surge in events taking place across the island, with demand for approvals at an all-time high.
“Madam President, let’s not talk about the fetes, because I have the privilege of signing off on those event forms, and there is not a day that there is no approval for a fete,” Govia said.
She noted that the calendar is so packed that organisers are competing for dates. “There were two last weekend, and right now people are fighting for dates. They are asking what dates are available because there is so much happening,” she added.
Govia described the events sector as a key driver of economic activity, with benefits spreading across various industries. “There is a trickle-down effect because when you go to the fete, the hairdressers are smiling, your nails are going to be done, you are going to buy clothing, makeup, taxi men are going to get work,” she explained.
The senator credited the Gaston Browne-led administration for creating the conditions for this level of growth, describing the bustling events scene as an indicator of a “glowing economy.”
“This is the performance of the Gaston Browne-led administration. Ticket after ticket, event after event—it’s an indication of a growing economy,” Govia stated.
Her remarks come amid ongoing debate on the 2025 budget, where the government’s economic performance remains a central focus.
