Senator Kiz Johnson Calls for Improved Road Signage and Infrastructure
Independent Senator Kiz Johnson has urged the government to adopt uniform and branded road signs across Antigua and Barbuda to improve navigation and enhance the country’s appearance.
Speaking during the 2025 budget debate in the Senate, Senator Johnson said the current lack of proper signage makes it difficult for residents and tourists to navigate.
“There is no way in 2024 people are still telling me that they don’t know the difference between Freetown, Newfield, and St. Phillips, much less the visitor who comes to Antigua to head to Willikies but ends up in Freeman’s Village,” she said.
The senator proposed the introduction of clear overhead signs and uniform roadside signage to address these issues. She noted that such improvements would enhance public safety, make navigation easier, and contribute to the country’s aesthetics.
“Antigua and Barbuda is paradise, and it must look and feel as such,” she said.
Senator Johnson commended the government’s ongoing plans to rename streets and number homes but stressed the need to incorporate comprehensive signage as part of these efforts.
“This will also add to the aesthetics of the country,” she added, emphasizing the importance of projecting a positive image to visitors.
The senator’s recommendations form part of her broader push for infrastructure development that reflects the country’s aspirations for growth and modernization. She called on policymakers to act swiftly, noting the practical and economic benefits of improved road signage for residents and the tourism sector alike.
