Senator Antonio Resigns; Kiz Johnson to Be Sworn In as Government Senator Today

Senator Clement Antonio has resigned from the Upper House of Parliament to take up a diplomatic post as Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, according to information broadcast on Pointe FM.

His resignation clears the way for Kiz Johnson, who is scheduled to be sworn in as a Government Senator at Government House this afternoon.

The development comes just hours after Johnson won last night’s Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party primary in St. Philip’s South, securing the party’s candidacy in a four-way contest and becoming the constituency’s new caretaker.

    ​Antonio’s swift deployment as Ambassador to China is a textbook strategic move to quell the Vehicle Gate Scandal. It physically removes a key player, deliberately lessening the public pressure needed for an independent enquiry.

    ​This is sickening. When I look in the mirror, all I see reflected is a political circus because our leadership is clearly not serious.

    ​And for the Opposition: If you don’t fix your house and stop assuming your turn will eventually come, this current administration’s perception of itself as being in power into perpetuity may just become a reality. We deserve a viable alternative.

    Kiz is a wonderful person. It just make the Govenor General original pick of her as an Independent Senator look a little bit weird, circumspect and questionable.

  19. For the record: Kiz Johnson was never appointed as an Independent Senator; rather she was independently appointed a Senator (appointed not by a party but by the Governor General). This is not to say that she was not an independent thinker, because she demonstrated that during her time in the Senate. She continues to be the independent thinker that she is (no one tells her what to think or say when she thinks and speaks).
    Part of the problem here with the comments is that people do not listen nor read closely what is said or presented: Former Senator Antonio is being appointed as the Resident Ambassador to China (that means he is going to be living there and working from there).
