Antigua and Barbuda Senate Approves 2024 Budget Amid Debate
The Senate has passed the 2024 Appropriation Bill after an intense debate, with Leader of Government Business Shenella Govia using her wrap-up remarks to defend the government’s performance and highlight key achievements.
Senator Govia described the budget as a roadmap for national progress, focusing on education, infrastructure, and housing. She pointed to the government’s Land Empowerment Program (LEP), which provides affordable land to citizens, and the Prime Minister’s Scholarship program, which supports 1,752 students, including those studying tuition-free at the University of the West Indies Five Islands campus.
“This budget is about creating opportunities for all Antiguans and Barbudans and building a resilient, prosperous nation,” Senator Govia told the Senate.
Govia responded to opposition criticisms, rejecting claims that Antiguans and Barbudans are underrepresented in senior roles in the tourism industry. She cited examples of locals holding top positions in both small and large hotels, including Jumby Bay and Jolly Beach Resort.
She also addressed concerns about infrastructure, comparing the government’s track record favourably with that of the previous administration. “We are not where we want to be, but the progress is undeniable,” she said, highlighting improved roads, housing developments, and healthcare services as evidence of the government’s efforts.
The senator dismissed accusations of inadequate support for education, pointing to an increase in technical training and scholarships in priority fields such as tourism and STEM subjects.
Senator Govia criticised opposition members for what she described as a lack of constructive input during the debate, urging them to focus on facts and national development.
In closing, she commended Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s leadership, crediting him with steering Antigua and Barbuda toward economic growth and stability. “This budget reflects the vision and commitment of a government dedicated to its people,” she said.
With the budget now approved, the government plans to move forward with initiatives aimed at fostering economic resilience, improving public services, and expanding opportunities for young people.
The 2024 budget debate saw sharp divisions, but its passage ensures the continuation of key programmes and infrastructure projects in the coming year.
“The people of Antigua and Barbuda recognize progress, and we are committed to delivering even more in 2025 and beyond.”
