Senate Approves Vehicle License Fee Hike Amid Opposition Protests

4

The Upper House has approved the Vehicle and Road Traffic Amendment Bill of 2025, sending it to the Governor General for assent. The legislation, which includes an increase in annual motor vehicle license fees, sparked protests from the opposition United Progressive Party.

In response to public concerns, the Prime Minister adjusted the proposed 40 percent hike, already approved by the Lower House. During Senate deliberations, Leader of Government Business Senator Shenella Govia defended the increase, emphasizing its role in funding urgent road repairs. She argued that the hike amounts to just 28 cents per day for most vehicle owners.

Opposition Senator David Massiah questioned the Transport Board’s accountability for previously collected funds, a concern echoed by opposition members. Government senators countered claims of over-taxation, with Senator Dwayne George describing the administration as responsible and compassionate.

Despite the heated debate, the Senate passed the bill, clearing the way for its implementation.

  2. It might be better if we dont even take these matters to Parliament. What are the possibilities of anything NOT being approved or passed? Gaston Browne makes these decisions on Saturday during his moments and BAM! Next thing you know it becomes LAW.

  3. Pensioners were promised an increase and were told they were working on it due to a tier system and those below will be adjusted some were adjusted from 300 to 500 as now the minimum pension but those above 1000 as public servants are still in limbo waiting on his promise then this come this increase on those with vehicles , not so good Mr PM not so good for pensions and for those that are struggling and are not working
