Seeds of Hope Programme Transforms Inmates’ Lives through Education
The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus (UWIFIC) is highlighting the success of its Seeds of Hope programme, launched in 2022, which provides incarcerated individuals with access to academic learning. The initiative has garnered praise from the government, residents, diaspora, and benefactors who have contributed resources and scholarships.
At the 2024 graduation ceremony of UWIFIC’s Lifelong Learning Unit (LLU), 14 inmates from His Majesty’s Prison received Certificates of Proficiency, with two earning Honour Student awards. LLU Executive Director Paula C. M. Lee emphasized the importance of ongoing support to expand the programme, noting that UWI’s digital platform enables inmates to engage in professional development without leaving the prison.
Lee also highlighted education’s role in reducing recidivism and aiding reintegration into society, despite the stigma surrounding imprisonment. Superintendent of Prisons Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather affirmed that UWIFIC’s partnership has been instrumental in advancing rehabilitation efforts.
Top graduate Kenisha Whyte, reflecting on the transformative impact of the programme, stated: “The Lifelong Learning Unit has been a beacon of hope and redemption. We are overcoming challenges, growing personally and academically, and striving for a brighter future.”
