The entire twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda is now covered by the National School Meals Programme. This as the NSMP officially opened its Barbuda Kitchen at a ceremony in Codrington earlier today (October 15, 2024).

Minister for Education, Creative Industries and Sports Hon. Daryll Matthew says the NSMP is critical to the wholistic development of the children of Antigua and Barbuda. Minister Matthew pledged Government’s continued support to the NSMP, given its importance to the education system.

“In effect what we are doing ladies and gentlemen, is trying to put everything in place to give our students the best opportunity to learn, the best opportunity to do well, the best opportunity to become citizens of this country who can compete with anyone, anywhere in the world”, Minister Matthew stated.

The Barbuda Kitchen of the NSMP is expected to provide a hot nutritious meal to over 200 children on a daily basis. The opening of the Barbuda Kitchen comes only a few weeks after the opening of a satellite kitchen at the Urlings Primary School, which serves the southern section of Antigua.

  1. Isn’t it wonderful to see the children in Barbuda being included in such a wonderful social program. By the way this program was initiated by the UPP under the stewardship of the then honorable Joan Massiah. But this ABLP Government saw the good in it and kept it.
However people as a financial person, I keep saying, are these program sustainable, since their is no means testing done. Children from parents that are rich and poor are been given these free meals. And I know their is no such thing called a free lunch. Someone has to pay for it.
