The Office of the Governor General announced today that it recently received reports from people who have been defrauded into paying monies using fake social media accounts in his name.

A statement from Government House said that an unnamed number of citizens had been “defrauded of hundreds of dollars in American Currency by a person or person(s) purporting to be ‘Rodney Williams or the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda’ on Facebook Messenger and Instagram.”

“The fake Facebook site features at least one photo of the Governor-General and Lady Williams,” the statement added.

The valid Facebook Page for the Governor General is ‘Governor-General Antigua Barbuda’.

According to Government House requests for the anticipated benefits from the monies required to be sent by unsuspecting persons to the perpetrators, are unlikely to be honoured.

The general public is asked to REFRAIN FROM SENDING ANY MONEY TO ANYONE PURPORTING TO BE THE GOVERNOR GENERAL UNLESS SUCH A REQUEST IS CONFIRMED BY THE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GENERAL.
