Sandals Host Secondary School Students For Two Week Hospitality Training Programme

Sandals Grande Antigua Resort and Spa recently welcomed fifth form students from the Otto’s Comprehensive School on a two-week programme focused on hospitality training and exposure.

The students, were assigned across several departments within the resort, including the front office, kitchen, weddings and food and beverage.

“The aim of this programme was to give our young leaders an insight into the world of work as well as exposure to many areas of opportunity within a hospitality-centered environment,” Learning and Development Manager, Carlene Spencer shared.

Tyreek Patrick, who was assigned to the front office department, said, “this was truly an amazing experience for my peers and me. After just one of the training, I would have learned a lot about Sandals and the front office operations. I was excited to see what week two had to offer as I learnt more about the hospitality industry.”

“The reception of the team at Sandals was really so warm and made us settle in well. I have learned so much and I was looking forward to the remaining days of training in the weddings department that ended too quickly.” Markayla Wellington added.

Resort General Manager David Latchimy, who met with the students on day one at their orientation, encouraged them to be open to learning and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the world’s greatest team members. “The common misconception over the years, especially among young people, is that working for a hotel just involves front-of-house and guest-facing interactions only. So it is our absolute pleasure to expose these students to all that we have to offer here. The truth is, the career offerings are endless, especially working within the Sandals environment. We have departments such as Information Technology, Public Relations, Sales, Entertainment, Photography and Butler Services that offer support to the overall guest experience of guests that visit our beautiful resort,” Latchimy shared.

The students concluded their training stint just before the start of the Christmas holidays and received a stipend as a thank you gesture. The students were also encouraged to sieze the opportunity to further enroll in the resort’s premiere hospitality training programme upon graduation from high school in 2024.

  1. Getting the youths ready for a life of waiting on the privileged.

Can the hospital have two weeks of students shadowing medical professionals to perhaps attack some interest in a healthcare profession?

Can there be some mentoring programs in these fields for students: AI, IT techs,
lawyers, entrepreneurs, engineers bankers, builders, electricians, teachers farmers, etcetera.

  2. We need linkages between the hotel industry and agriculture. Yesterday the government displayed that it had no regards for the agriculture sector and by extension food security. All we get is lip service about food security. It was so shameful to see one arm of government housing/ CHAPA destroying crops soon ready to harvest like sweet potatoes, cassava , fruit trees and irrigation. Right now sweet potato 🍠 is 7.00 per lb in te supermarkets.
This is a government that is priding itself that it is more experienced and more fitting to run this country. Yet they waste money, resources and now food like pure novice.
Antigua needs to be beautiful yes , but a well planned tree and flower planting should be done. The palms planted on oil refinery road is a waste of money. A cover up for the money this nation recently found out was squandered by him in high place wife – MP Maria.
Again it seems that all the ministers of government are yes men to the top dog and his wifey. Don’t tell me that the minister of agriculture don’t have the balls to stand up and say give my technicians some time to harvest and secure our irrigation. Is this what experience is about? Oh you are known for not giving time for anyone to prepare- like at the budget presentation.
So I don’t mind if I have to pay more taxes but first we have to cut out all the waste. I will not have enough time to point out all thd waste that will add up to much more then the 2% ABST increase.
Just one – The utility lights base that our tax dollars paid to install. I was driving back of Piggots going to cricket at the stadium. I saw all these monuments sticking out the ground. I started looking everywhere I drive and saw the millions of dollars that were wasted on these foundations base. Antigua is s poor country and I don’t care which administration- we need to be prudent and put country and especially the poor and vulnerable about self .

  3. Happy to hear that our young people had a fulfilling experience. Kudos to the company for hosting them.
    OCS THE BEST!!!

  4. Great initiative.
Here’s hoping many varied businesses will offer a similar opportunity to others during 2024.
Let’s build and encourage our youth to grow themselves professionally and personally.
