Senator Samantha Marshall has announced her resignation from the Senate, making way for new rising stars within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.
Serving as the Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Marshall’s departure marks a notable shift in the nation’s legislative body which will now see few females.
Marshall, a seasoned attorney and public servant, has been a prominent figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s politics. She first entered the political arena in 2007 and was elected to represent St. Mary’s South in the House of Representatives in June 2014.
During her tenure, she held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Social Transformation and Human Resource Development, with responsibilities extending to Youth and Gender Affairs.
Her leadership was instrumental in initiating transformative programs such as the Home Advancement Programme for the Poor and Indigent (HAPPI) and the Support and Referral Centre for victims of rape and sexual assault. She has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and has introduced laws to strengthen the arm against domestic violence.
After losing her parliamentary seat in the January 2023 general elections, Marshall was appointed to the Senate on January 23, 2023, and subsequently named Leader of Government Business. Her decision to resign aligns with her personal aspirations and a desire to create opportunities for younger voices in government. In a recent statement, she expressed her intentions:
“What for me now I don’t know. I’m looking at other opportunities as I expressed to the Prime Minister, and when I’ve decided what is coming my way, I will indicate accordingly. Until now, I’m just getting some rest and being able to engage again with my family at another level, so I’m taking it easy.”
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has in the past acknowledged Marshall’s contributions.
He recently confirmed that the new Leader of Government Business will be Senator Shenella Govia who will also serve as the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Creative Industries, being considered as a potential candidate.
Marshall’s departure is part of a broader reshuffling in the Upper House of Parliament, as Senator Osbert Frederick is also set to leave his current position to assume the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Senator Mary Clair Hurst is also leaving the senate.
These changes are expected to bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to the nation’s legislative processes.
As Marshall steps back from her official duties, she plans to return to private law practice and spend quality time with her family.
Her legacy of service and dedication to the people of Antigua and Barbuda remains a testament to her commitment to public service.
