Land Adjudication Process in Barbuda to Begin Soon, Says Attorney General

Attorney General Steadroy ‘Cutie’ Benjamin has announced that the long-awaited land adjudication process in Barbuda will commence within 21 days, with land sales expected to begin by the end of April or early May.

Speaking on Pointe FM radio alongside Prime Minister Gaston Browne, the Attorney General defended the government’s approach to land ownership and development in Barbuda. He criticized ongoing protests led by the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM), accusing them of obstructing progress and misleading the people.

“Barbudans will soon transition from tenants to landowners through a process that empowers them to own land for just $1,” Benjamin stated. He reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring Barbuda develops alongside Antigua, with significant investments already made in housing, infrastructure, and renewable energy.

Prime Minister Browne joined the discussion, emphasizing the government’s efforts to transform Barbuda into a luxury destination. He pointed to key projects such as the construction of an international airport, improvements to roads, and plans for renewable energy expansion.

“Barbuda is on track to becoming one of the most desirable places to live and visit, thanks to the government’s transformative policies,” Browne said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted a $100 million grant from the Chinese government, part of which is being used to develop housing for Barbudans, including the Booby Alley project.

The Attorney General accused the BPM of politicizing the issue of land ownership to maintain influence and disrupt the government’s initiatives.

“They have repeatedly been involved in consultations, yet they spread misinformation to block progress. The Privy Council has already settled the matter—unclaimed land in Barbuda belongs to the Crown,” Benjamin said.

The Prime Minister echoed these sentiments, accusing the BPM of fostering division for political gain. “This government will not compromise development for political preservation. Our priority is the empowerment of all Barbudans,” Browne asserted.

Benjamin and Browne appealed to Barbudans to focus on the island’s development rather than political distractions. “The time has come for us to unite as one nation. The government is committed to improving the welfare and livelihoods of all Barbudans,” Benjamin said.

The land adjudication process marks a significant step in resolving long-standing tensions over land ownership in Barbuda. The government’s plans aim to provide Barbudans with legal ownership while fostering economic growth and infrastructure development.

  1. And when will Antiguans be able to do the same??? A class action lawsuit needs to be brought against the government, because this is not fair or equal

  2. Antiguans and Barbudans should be happy that they have a caring government, and working on every one behalf,,,

But i came to realize that Mr.Trevor walker are becoming very fearful because he might get some competition where is business is concern…

  3. Antiguan need to get land for $1.00 ec also.

  4. If you, Barbudans, accede to this trickery, it will be the real beginning of your demise. Freehold plots for you, is freehold for all the interlopers; those who occupy hundreds and even thousands of acres. Don’t forget for a second, that those who are forcing the agenda already have theirs apportioned long before the talks. They have informed us that PLH has amassed some $1.4 BILLION in sales and rentals during the first quarter of last year
and they are anticipating theirs too. Barbudans, do your research on the conditions in South Africa and neighboring Zimbabwe and decide if that’s the model you desire. The choice is yours.
