Final preparations are underway for the relocation of Saint John’s Fire Station to allow for the construction of a new facility.

The move is expected to be completed later this week, with firefighters stationed at Dredge Bay in a building owned by the Antigua Port Authority. The temporary site was previously used by Saint John’s Police Station, which is itself undergoing major renovations.

Inspector Lester Basden confirmed that telephone extension lines have already been transferred to the new location, with the fire service’s emergency system also to be moved once installation is complete. Fire tenders will then be relocated from the Factory Road base within 24 hours.

The government announced in late 2024 that the 60-year-old Saint John’s Fire Station would be rebuilt. The project, expected to start in December 2025 and last for two years, will see the Ministry of Works oversee demolition and foundation works.

Officials said financing for the new fire station will be provided through the Global Climate Fund.
