
Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Charles Fernandez says a major runway rehabilitation project at VC Bird International Airport is on track for completion by September 2026, describing the work as a critical investment in national infrastructure and long-term tourism growth.
Speaking in a video message outlining the government’s tourism strategy, Fernandez said the US$50 million project is central to improving safety, reliability and operational capacity at the country’s main international gateway .
“Air access and aviation infrastructure remain central to sustaining this growth,” Fernandez said, noting that the runway rehabilitation represents “a critical investment in our national infrastructure” .
According to the minister, the project will strengthen the airport’s ability to accommodate increased airlift and support expanded airline operations, positioning Antigua and Barbuda to meet future demand as tourism activity continues to grow.
“Scheduled for completion by September 2026, this project will enhance safety, reliability and operational capacity, supporting increased airlift and positioning Antigua and Barbuda for expanded airline operations well into the future,” Fernandez said .
