A major runway expansion has begun at VC Bird International Airport in Antigua and Barbuda.

The $55m EC project will be carried out in eight phases, including a new turning bay and resurfacing of the existing runway. Officials say the upgrades will bring the airport in line with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, improving safety and efficiency.

The works are being managed by Aecon Company Ltd in partnership with Kelly Construction Inc, with much of the aggregate sourced locally.

Civil Aviation Minister Charles Fernandez, who joined airport authority officials at the launch, said the project would boost tourism and commercial aviation.

The expansion is due to be completed by November 2026.

  1. Wow! A road building programme; water infrastructure in progress; housing development ongoing; and now an airport expansion.

Whatever next? A reduction in crime??

Which begs the obvious question in regards to the ABLP’s previous sluggishness: why wasn’t all the above manifesto projects adhered to as promised to the electorate over the last TWO terms of lost governance???

All of them would have been completed by now instead of this – guilt ridden – rush job.

    EARLY ELECTION INCOMING???

  2. While I am happy about the expansion which is surely an enhancement to the airport itself, I know eventually is the flying public that will end up footing the bill

  3. Hoping the construction goes on schedule. By 2026, this could really help Antigua handle more flights and tourists.

  4. Finally, some major improvements at V.C. Bird! The new runway and turning bay should make arrivals and departures much smoother.
