Cde. Rufus A. Lewis Honoured for Lifelong Dedication to Labour Movement

St John’s, Antigua – 4 May 2025

Veteran trade unionist Cde. Rufus Adolphus Lewis OM was honoured today at a special church service hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) in celebration of Labour Day.

The recognition, which took place during the union’s annual Labour Day church service, celebrated Lewis’s extraordinary legacy of service spanning more than six decades. Lewis, who joined the AT&LU at just 15 years old in 1939, was commended for his unwavering dedication to the labour movement and the rights of workers across Antigua and Barbuda.

In presenting the award, AT&LU officials recounted Lewis’s early involvement as secretary of the union’s Swetes section in 1954 and his later role as Shop Steward for Non-Established Workers at the Public Works Department. He went on to serve for 22 unbroken years on the AT&LU’s Executive Committee, retiring in 2001 as First Vice President.

During his tenure, Lewis also contributed to national development through his work with the National Labour Board and the National Minimum Wage Committee, while representing the union at conferences and seminars both locally and internationally.

In a post shared by the AT&LU, the union thanked Lewis “for your dedication, advocacy and loyalty to the Labour Movement and the Working Class,” adding, “May the Almighty Father continue to bless and protect you.”

Sunday’s service formed part of the 74th anniversary celebrations of Labour Day in Antigua and Barbuda.
