The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party is set to appoint former West Indies cricketer Richie Richardson as a Senator and the new Minister of Sports, replacing Daryll Matthew. Richardson will succeed Senator Marie Clare Hurst, who is stepping down for personal reasons.
Richardson, renowned for his dynamic cricket career and leadership as West Indies captain from 1991 to 1995, is celebrated for his aggressive batting. He was named one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1992. With 5,949 runs in Tests and 6,248 in ODIs, he is one of four knighted cricketers from Antigua and Barbuda. The University of the West Indies has also honored him with an honorary Doctor of Laws for his sports contributions.

I am always pleased to see treasured national icons like Sir Richie Richardson stepping up to the plate and continuing their service to nation building. Sir Richie is a cool and level headed person and I do think he would make an excellent Minister of Sports. My hope is that he would be allowed to work and function with some level of self determination and autonomy so he can really get the work done. I am one of Richie’s biggest fan. I know he is a great all around Sportsman, track and field, soccer, basketball, cricket, even golf, yes sports is in his blood, but he is also a very humble and honest guy.
All the years I’ve known Richie, he has never backed down from a challenged and this if accepted will be one of his biggest challenge. You see Minister of sport is all good and i know you will be the dam best Sport minister ever, but at the same time it’s Politics and we know all politicians are corrupt, so corrupt you will become.

In my opinion,the Senators should be Elected by the people.Let them go out there and engaged with the Constituents.Not be selected just to say “YES”to all Government Bills in Parliament. They are nothing but yes people.They should have levels of self independence within them.If they were elected.They would vote with their Constituents in mind.Then Gaston Browne or any other leader could not control them.We need to change that Senate position.Make an amendment to the Constitution if needs be.
