Prime Minister Gaston Browne says a victory for the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party is assured following the election of Michael Joseph in the December 8, 2023, Rural West Primary vote.
Joseph secured a major victory, defeating his closest rival by close to 300 votes, securing 385 of the 623 votes cast. Russell Ellis polled 94 votes, Kevin Morgan 89, Shawn Benjamin 47 and Aziza Lake 7.
Browne told Pointe FM that he is disappointed in the performance of Lake, a former senator in the upper house.
According to the ABLP leader, this emphasizes that if individuals are qualified but lack the common touch they will not be sucessful.
In this clip below, Browne reveals that Joseph will be appointed Senator next year and thanks him for the delivering the Rural West constituency back in the hands of the ABLP, next election.

People in Antigua vote party. If a party is not in favour with the people, the candidate does not matter. The last election proved that with a major swing due to dislike of the ALP leader, Gaston. Michael Joseph is a good guy but Gaston is still very much disliked and that will not change but only grow stronger with time. If UPP can select the right leader then their strength in the next election will only grow.
Again, the selection of the next UPP leader is crucial. You hear Gaston there talking about the common touch? UPP needs a leader with that common touch who can draw the entire country to him with his charisma and likability. Lovell never had that. If the UPP chooses a leader that has that common touch and draws people to him, then their chances of winning in each and every constituency will grow as a vote for the UPP candidate is really a vote for the UPP leader. Antiguans vote based on who they like or dislike as leader of the party. That is why we had a large swing against Gaston in the last election due to a significant drop in his likeability. Many, many ALP voters stayed home as they no longer believed in or liked Gaston. UPP, make sure you choose the right leader!
@ Not So Common, you are absolutely correct when you mention that the UPP have to get their next leader of the party right.
UPP have made great strides since being last in power, however if they find someone who isn’t afraid to take Gaston Browne on and play him at his own game and Litigious behaviour, then winning at the next election will be a formality.
I have a couple of preferences in the Honourable Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon or Ms D. Gisele Isaacs.
Tremendous individuals that’ll hold the current incumbent to account.
Putting the right person in charge to take the country forward and out of the mire is a must!

Tell the people how many registered members were apart of the branch in 2022. Buying votes and registering persons to vote by paying their dues is not a sign of support.
UPP , stop cursing Gaston Browne and focus on a proper Leader to win the next election. So far, I have not seen a proper leader within the UPP at this moment. We need someone to go head to head with Gaston. Are there any young , dynamic persons supporting UPP ? Jamale Pringle has the safest seat witnin the UPP. All the other UPP seats are very weak.
