Certain retailers are exploiting the recent two-percent ABST increase by engaging in deceptive practices to overcharge customers in some areas.
Orrin Steele, head of the Prices and Consumers Affairs Division, revealed that some retailers are unlawfully not reflecting the ABST increase on shelf notices, claiming it will be added at the checkout.
Steele emphasized that all prices, including the ABST, must be displayed on shelves, and he personally visited non-compliant retailers to enforce this.
The department responded to consumer complaints about overpricing by dispatching officers to investigate.
Steele highlighted concerns about unjustified price increases and instances of applying the tax to zero-rated items.
He advocated for regulatory changes to empower the department in dealing with law-breaking retailers, proposing immediate penalties as a deterrent against price gouging practices.

Whats all this talk about!!! If they are doing something illegal then fine who needs to be fined. Stop this pitiful excuse and apply what you can as empowered by legislation.
One of the largest supermarkets I have noticed, not only did they increase the price of most products on the shelfs but are taxing the customers when checking out the 17%. SHAME ON YOU. AREN’T YOU RICH ENOUGH?
“shelves” correction
When the port reported over $400 million in revenue, where did the increase in revenue come from? The increase in the price of imported goods and shipping costs. These costs have to be passed to the consumers. Delivery cost wii go up because of the additional 2% in delivery costs. My question is why the additional ABST at this time when there was such a substantial increase in port revenue? Do not know if there is gouging by the merchants, but we should think about the other higher input cost that are subjected to the increase in ABST.
