Response to letter ABLP hierarchy needs to be mindful that welcoming former UPP members can cause a conflict of interest by Fitzroy
I agree with some of what letter writer, Fitzroy, says and there was quite a lot of reactions. Politics like life is dynamic and ever changing. How many of us were deeply in love with someone at 17, 18 while at school and swore that we would be together for the rest of our lives. Love can’t done. And 5 years later we can’t even remember the person. Things, circumstances and life all change. We learn with experience.
Some of the things I liked at 20 I no longer indulge in.
But with politics, I don’t have a problem with people waking up and changing their mindset, their opinions and their political affiliation. Look at what is happening in the US. There is now a group of Republicans publicly supporting the Democratic candidate as they see Trump as toxic.
When a UPPite crosses the political line, the ABLP which is an experienced political machine must examine why that person crossed. People are behaving like if this is something new. People have been crossing for more than 50 years. The late Reuben Harris and Christopher O’Marde served VC Bird. They were not originally ALP. Neither were Chet Green, now Chairman of the ABLP and Melford Nicholas.
Errol Cort started in the ABLP and switched to UPP. The Mansoors were always ALP until Mr. T came on the scene and they were upset that VC did not remove him from competing with them. Thus, they switched allegiance. So, Dr. Mansoor has returned home. Colin O’Neal spent years on Crusader Radio cursing the ABLP. Today he is an ABLP Senator and Gaston’s mouthpiece.
The ones I have a problem with is the toxic ones who come across, stand for nothing and then suddenly wield absolute power. One such person is Donna Chaia, who used to be Harold Lovell’s shadow and cursed and abused the ABLP and its supporters for years. Some of what she said can never be forgiven and will never be forgotten. When she and Lovell fell out of love, she switched and has now become Gaston’s shadow. He can’t move any where without her. She even said on radio that she gave him advice while sitting in his VIP box at cricket. I wonder how many of his real supporters he invited to sit in his box? Is Gaston really running the country or is it the likes of Donna Chaia influencing and making the decisions.
How could someone who cursed the ABLP, its leaders and supporters for years suddenly cross and become a powerhouse for the people she abused? Many people boast about how smart and street-smart Gaston is, but is he really? Or is it that he does not see any talent among his own ABLP supporters? Every time Donna Chaia opens her mouth 200 ABLP supporters leave the party.
I have been an ABLP supporter all my life but I am not re-registering as I will not vote against my party but I will also not vote for this ABLP.

@Denzel – you made some interesting points which drove me to making my comments.
First, I don’t know Donna Chaia since I am not deep into politics but you appear to have a personal issue there.
I think most persons do understand that relationships change over time and so they one’s political view. However, jumping from one relationship right into the next might not be fair to both parties and to the public may be interpreted as a Slot. In politics, people might consider you as a political Slot as well.
In your case, you intend to abstain from voting in the future but you did not switch – which is quite respectable.
You reference to the USA scenario it different, the republicans are not becoming democrats. It is quite a different situation there because you vote for your representative and also for the President.
I agree with the writer’s point. I have supported and argued for the ABLP. When UPP said they cannot help me as there are already too many attorneys so they are not offering grants/scholarships in that field while offering it to others, I said this would never happened to me under ABLP. Guess what? ABLP did worse.
UPP denied me money (scholarship) and we know money is a scarce resource. But ABLP denied me something is small and minor as support to simply have my endeavor/business be classified as nationally important, so that my applications can be decided on the merit and expeditiously. So, one party deny me of the smallest and most basic request (my former party, ABLP), while UPP deny me of something that is scarce and expensive, money.
So, who have treated me worse?
I remember with my father, I said, it is because of UPP by father was charged when he was previously cleared and this will never happen under ABLP. Years later, completed law school (JD recipient, advance degree holder), father was charged under ABLP, no reasonable person could have concluded a crime was committed, all evidence and witnesses corroborate the story of my father, practically all the state witnesses but he was still charged. Prosecutor even told me should not have been charged but they just handed him the case. This worse situation happened under ABLP. I told this man I considered to be my rolemodel, look into this matter and you will see there are no grounds at all for charging, he ignored. I went to the acting prosecutor at the time, she being ignorant of the law says it in inappropriate for us to talk about the case (not sure what rule of evidence or professional responsibility she gets that from, because it does not exist, not within the attorney multistate professional responsibility exam I did and pass).
I must say, the party I argued for, ABLP, and supported, have done worse to me and my family than the party I never ever supported, UPP.
When your ABLP party can bring in a UPP member and grant him a big position, money, car, protection, job, status but tell you as a ABLP supporter all my life that they cannot help upon do something as telling an office to make a decision on the merit and expeditiously for this man who is a supporter, who wants to provide jobs, who has all resources, who DOES NOT wants any money, but want to give money instead, wants to give scholarship, wants to donate and have donated, why not do that basic thing that truly, you can lawfully do for any and all people. Why would the party of my entire family say no to them doing something that will better them and the community? This I cannot explain or understand to date.
So my conclusion is, both UPP and ABLP are horrible and should not be supporter but ABLP, the only party I ever supported in Antigua, is the worse.
Be careful who your rolemodel is because you may find out he cares nothing at all about you, justice and fairness.
Do these ABLP ignoramuses on this thread have meaningful day jobs? Or is posting on here their jobs? Either way they have become insipid. Whoever tells you that posting the same damn nonsense over and over again will cause supporters to leave the UPP, has misinformed you. So you can stop now and save the post space. No one reads them anyway, just by seeing the ridiculous headings.

@My way of helping. Word on the street is that you have burned bridges with both the ABLP and UPP with some of your actions and words over the years so its no wonder that they don’t listen to you or want anything to do with you. The arrogance doesn’t help either.
You should try a different approach if you really want to help the 268 or just forget about lecturing people about advanced this and expert that and just enjoy the bright lights of NYC.

I don’t have a problem with people changing parties. However, I do have a problem with some of them who used to curse the ALP in the nastiest ways, coming over to the ALP and being rewarded with big positions, salaries and perks while ALP lifelong supporters are sidelined. Prime 2 are Colin O’Neal and Donna Chaia. They cursed and cursed and cursed the ALP. Now suddenly they are power houses in the same ALP. I know Gaston is the World Boss but how is the party allowing this? O’Neal gets his Senator salary, paid by Public Works, paid by Marijuana Board and his job at Point FM. Chaia is on 3 Boards plus gets paid as a Consultant. Can this ever be right when some comrades not even getting one pay?
Gaston had raided the UPP and scratched the bottom of the barrel to find drug dealers and dishonest, contemptuous persons because it’s almost impossible to find anything better in his own party. They are employed to be hecklers and hooligans on ANR; not qualified to make any meaningful contributions. Seems like they were instructed to recruit Pringle and Richard Lewis because they will not give these men a break.
Sometimes I am a little skeptical about all these people leaving and joining the ABLP. Could it be a bigger plot of putting their people close in the leadership of the ABLP like a trojan horse or a spy and then when the time is ripe they let the labour party implode. You never know. But one has to be very carefull who they invite into their home. I have seem it in Lamin, the division he caused when running for ASW. I know Regis has been quiet about the new developments. But I’m watching it from a distance. Lamin is in it for the wrong reason and I hope Jamal would beat his backside at the next election. The people of All Saint East and Sint Luke should not accept him just so. Not even a primary or a survey.
