An Antigua resort has been ordered to pay more than EC$29,000 to a former receptionist who was fired nearly three decades ago for refusing to change his hairstyle.

The Industrial Court ruled that Mill Reef Club’s 1998 dismissal of Andre Thomas breached his constitutional rights and violated principles of good industrial relations.
Thomas, who had worked at the resort for six years, was suspended and later dismissed after a new European manager demanded he alter his appearance.
The court noted there had been no complaints about his hairstyle and that the resort had no formal grooming policy.
Judges found the termination “frivolous and extreme,” criticising the resort for denying union representation and failing to investigate the matter. The club’s destruction of employment records also weakened its defence during proceedings, which began in 2011.
Thomas was awarded EC$29,325.60 in compensation, including lost income, damages, and legal costs. Mill Reef Club must pay the amount by 17 November 2025.

Too sarry a nar $29,000,000.00
Look at the length of time which passed for this man to get his justice!!!! 2025 just about to end. Murdah!
It should have been more. Mill Reef management don’t give a damn about black people. Pure slavery vibes up at that establishment.
Tired a them hotels cuz they have staff like slave boss. And numerous hotels have dumb ass managers that just fire staff wrongfully and it go end up costing the Company in the long run .Them Managers need training though.
Saying that it’s a European manager instead of a white Manager, doesn’t give justice to the agregeous and blatantly racist action that firing was.
“Change your appearance” really?
That type of blatant racism was outright blatant in the Caribbean back in those days..
I used to work at pelican Bay, and there was this German girl that was crazy about me, long story short, when me and her were in the water frolicking, her brother was on the balcony of their hotel room just looking at us and would not move, so I asked the girl why he keeps doing that, she told me that her brother doesn’t want her to date black men, he doesn’t like us.
So yes folks, that type of blatant racism was rampant. I didn’t marry that girl because of that, and I didn’t catch any feelings for a white woman since..that was 1989.
Sorry * Dickerson Bay*
The court should have added on at least a 7% interest because of how long the case took.
This is not justice….
Just goes to show that justice delayed is not necessarily justice denied. I’m happy he stayed the course and fought for his rights.
While I’m glad he won and its settles, I hope that the club will be held accountable for its general behavior towards locals. Additionally, I hope thought was given to loss of accrued interest over the period.
