In a candid letter addressed to Senator Shawn Nicholas, General Secretary of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Winston Henry, a long-time member and former chair of the party’s Rural East Branch, announced his decision to step away from the UPP.

After more than two decades of service, Henry expressed concerns about the growing internal divisions and the perceived failure of the party leadership to address them.

Henry, who served the party in various roles over the past 23 years, including as Public Relations and Mobilization Officer, emphasized that the party had once been a space for open discussions and varying opinions.

He noted, however, that recent months have seen a shift toward intolerance, leading to factions and a divisive “us versus them” mentality. Henry called out the leadership for not taking steps to unite the party after its convention, contributing to what he describes as a decline in public confidence in the UPP’s ability to govern.

Despite stepping away from active participation, Henry reassured that his commitment to the party’s principles and its candidates remains unchanged.

He intends to pursue a new path as a political commentator, where he feels he can speak more freely and offer an honest assessment of political matters, including issues within the UPP itself.

In his letter, Henry also made several recommendations for the party’s leadership, including conducting a comprehensive assessment of the party’s standing with the public, creating a “truth commission” to assess grassroots opinions, and fostering more open communication among Members of Parliament.

He urged the leadership to provide a level playing field for aspiring candidates and maintain a consistent media presence to set the national agenda.

Henry closed the letter by expressing hope that the UPP would make the necessary changes to restore unity and strengthen its chances of becoming the next government in Antigua and Barbuda.

While he plans to step away from the party, he remains open to discussions on the matters raised and hopes the party will take decisive action to address its internal issues.

Though Henry has no intention of making the letter public, he plans to share his decision and thoughts during his next conversation with Dave Lester Payne.

  4. I just have one comment Winston. When you were on Observe SEVERAL MONTHS AGO with your tyrant utterances you indicated that you were not a part of the United Progressive Party but a Political Analyst so you are free to speak.
You weren’t a member or member at large of the party. You weren’t a party of leadership. You did not attend Central Executive or General Council. The Party can’t event really pronounce that you voted for them. So you were just a regular card carrying member with an axe to grind.
So tell me again… WHICH PARTY ARE YOU SENDING THE RESIGNATION LETTER TO?
The United Progressive Party in Canada headed by Carlton
The United Progressive Party in Nigeria headed by Dr. Chekwas Okorie who has more aligned with the APC. So they do not exist. Or The United Progressive Party in South Korea that was dissolved by the Supreme Court of South Korea?
But it wasn’t the United Progressive Party in Antigua and Barbuda led by Hon. Jamale Pringle.
BE HONEST TO THE PEOPLE NUH JACK!
    MERRRRRDAH

  9. @ Dave Ray, 2 Corinthians 12:20 clearly states:

“For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder …”

  10. “Pringle stated that departures were due to personal reasons, not his leadership, and affirmed that the UPP remains united…”

    MERCYYYYYY MAH BELLAYYYYYYYY!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

de Man Cow really taught you well. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  11. 1). Gisele wants Richard Lewis GONE!!!!
2). Shawn wants to resign, but loveLIE begged her not to

stay tuned for more CHAOS and DEPARTURES from upp…

    UPP LEADERSHIP CRISIS!
    MAYDAY!!!! MAYDAY!!!!! MAYDAY!!!!!!

  12. Another one. Oh well. Onwards. Winston Henry does not a party make.
Still a lot of good, honest, warriors left who see the importance of removing Gaston Browne and ALP from office more important than personal gripes. Onwards

  13. These are really turbulent times for the UPP. It’s members, past and present really perfect the art of pouring on more fuel on the fire when the heat is on. This is hey day for the ABLP as they have succeeded at least in creating chaos and confusion within the ranks of the UPP And what a better time to call an election than now. Given what is happening in the UPP, even current Members of Parliament on the UPP side must be very nervous as this turmoil is likely to also affect them and their chances of being reelected.
I predict that we are gearing up for a snap election in November or February 2025. Crucial times are ahead of us.

  14. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😫😭🤣
Hollwerid cynt mek this 💩💩💩💩 up

  15. nobody just quits their life after 23 yrs…. I will say this though, there are certain elements of the UPP that will slice and dice you if you disagree with there opinions or even dare to have one of your own….

  16. Spencer must take some blame. He sat by and said nothing when he knew the woman was out of control. He and Harold. They let her go on a spree.

Peace and Unity will not come to the UPP until Giselle and Pringle resign and vacate the place. Pringle could be rehab, but not while he is hanging in with the chairman.

All this madness will continue as long as she is still in the chair spreading her brand of disunity and revenge.

  17. @Audley Phillip September 19, 2024 At 9:20 am
Why blaming Gaston Browne for the internal bickering of the UPP? Why not see it for what it is and tell them to solve their internal egos. And it seems that certainly don’t have any clue when it comes to political strategies. Prime Minister Browne has no reason whatsoever to call early elections now. All he needs now is focus on governing the country. Pass unpopular bills and policies because the opposition is weak to give him any challenge. He can easily ride out five years and still be popular enough to win the election. It would take the UPP at least three to four years to get themselves together and form a credible opposition against the ABLP. No one will waste money on them, and we know it takes money to campaign and win an election. Ask Asot Michael how much money he had to throw in St. Peters to win.

  18. If a die hard PR propogandist like Winston Henry throws in the towel, then all is over. He has been the voice on the radio for the UPP for many many years. UPP is done with. Lewis what are you waiting on. Take your supporters and start your own party. You cannot even use the Name UPP as an ASSET. The Reason why Gaston had to rebrand the ALP into the ABLP. He had to fight the old guard to let go and he is still doing so with all these young people coming in and the old is made to transition out. You can be the Gaston Browne of the New UPP. And bring back Joan Massiah

  19. It’s a snowball effect, I keep telling upp supporters to look within and stop buying the bullshit that people paying people to leave while ignoring why all of them keep saying the same thing after they leave.

  20. ALL the ALP mercenaries are out in full red and gloating over things that don’t concern them but while they’re at it,we are all going down the drain as a result of the ALP’s mismanagement, incompetence and corruption. Every last one of us is still experiencing water and garbage-collection issues, deplorable roads, including those that have been repaired recently, very high utility rates, high cost of food and commodities and a crime rate that is swiftly rivaling those islands that our government so regularly criticize. Our conditions can only get worse when the UPP defectors have colluded with the dictatorship to keep the pressure on us. How to correct those things should be our primary concern.

    • You see the upp is just a “party” whereas the Labour Party is an INSITUTION!!! note the difference. coming together to be spiteful, vindictive, jealous and badminded to ABLP was not a good foundation for upp to stand on. The people of Antigua and Baburda and the world at large get to see what the upp is made of – rotten to the core, with maggots seeping out and a fecal stench. Run for the hill before the lipstick-wearing hog tramples you to death.

  21. In this instance I can accept and appreciate this resignation, as to why the letter had to be made public is beyond me.
The Labour Party is riddled with issues but you do not hear it in the media, this is something the UPP needs to adapt and implement.

  22. The answer to your question is simple. The UPP is controlled by a band of thugs who should probably have been invited to the PM’s peace talks with the rival, feuding gangs recently. The ruling ABLP is the real deal. We have real women who defend honor and principled conduct. We also have men with backbone and talent, men – WOMEN – with real balls. Until and unless the UPP adopts the right formulae they will remain POSTRATE at the feet of the ONE(S) whose PROSTATE needs serious examination!
