Residents need to stage protest over Administration’s nonchalant attitude to rising crime, UPP officers say

Source Real News- The Easter weekend was marred by the stabbing death of an Old
Road villager, Ricaldo Joseph, evidence of the rise in violent crime.

It follows a call by two officers of the United Progressive Party (UPP) for the people of Antigua and Barbuda to take a definitive stance against the increase in crime, given the Gaston Browne Administration’s nonchalant attitude to the issue.

Critics say it appears that comparing the local crime rate against other Caribbean countries, and concluding that Antigua and Barbuda has the lowest crime rate is good enough for the Cabinet and Public Safety Minister Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin.

But D.Gisele Isaac, chairman of the UPP, says the entire country is being affected, with residents fearful at night – and even in the daytime – to leave their doors unlocked and their windows open.

Isaac says this fear alone should compel the population to rise up and demand that the Government do better – or stage protest action.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer Damani Tabor is condemning the Administration for not lending more support and undertaking strategic planning with the Police in order to reduce criminalactivity.

  1. No UPP officer has any moral authority to persuade the citizens & residents of this country to protest against crimes when persons from the UPP hierarchy encouraged the nation to chop up tax collectors; asked for a gun license to kill; placed a guns on a table to intimidate a fellow colleague. The list can go on & on

UPP need to PICK THE BEAM OUT OF THEIR OWN EYE or CLEAN UP THEIR OWN BACK YARD before making a request of the nation to protest .

Fair’s fair. We are on opposite sides of the political divide however, what you said is true and are the most disgraceful and appalling words I’ve ever heard uttered by a Prime Minister. That said, the Commissioner of Police, Attorney General and Prime Minister are a bunch of clueless dunderheads who will not or cannot address the most pressing social issue plaguing Antigua. They claim Antigua has a low crime rate, really? Sound bite after sound bite cannot or will not wish the problem away. You see, for a few votes ABLP has put party before country and now we are where we are. Not in a good place at all.

    • No surprise from Bluddy Bloke to condone the rise in criminal activities and giving the police commissioner Attlee Rodney and the Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin a free pass.

And BTW, talking about giving those in authority a free pass. Hasn’t the ABLP been in charge for more than 2 terms now, and yet According to Bluddy Joke, insinuating that the rise in crime is the fault of the UPP!!!

Another ABLP acolyte that has s#@t for brains 🧠

Your hatred for the UPP has distorted your view of right and wrong. We don’t care what happened under UPP. We, at the moment, just want to live in peace and run our businesses in peace without being robbed and threatened by gun men. We want to be able to sleep without fear of waking up to gun men robbing us.
It is disgraceful that neither Cutie, the police commissioner or the prime minister has come to the people to address this issue. What are they afraid of, that the tourists will stop coming? Even tourists are now being targeted and when they tell their stories on social media, they certainly will stop coming. And you can blame UPP for that.

  2. It is Antigua, they hate anything that would better them. They have zero vision. Not even the comprehension to value those with the knowledge and degree in the area that they are having problems with. You are speaking to statistically proven some of the most incompetent people on planet earth.

  3. Allow responsible citizens to own firearms to protect life and property not just friends and family and friends of family.

  5. Good to hear upp think it can call on government concerning crime but the citizens are the one that should by becoming civic minded and Patriotic, and don’t tell me of the church cause from slavery the church is to create this benign atmosphere while they get power and money while black people are leaved in apathy and obedience. If we become ideological as owner of this land none of the political party will tell us when to act.
