Residents in St John’s Rural South are calling for stricter enforcement of noise regulations, saying loud music from nearby bars is disrupting sleep and affecting daily life.
Speaking at a town hall meeting, one resident said music was still blaring at 2:30 a.m., warning that chronic lack of rest could affect people’s mental health and job performance.
Another resident, who said she is recovering from surgery and caring for two autistic children, complained that weekend noise often begins as early as 5 p.m. and continues until 3 a.m., even on Sunday nights ahead of the work and school week.
Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin and Prime Minister Gaston Browne pledged to involve police to ensure bar operators comply with the law, which requires music to be reduced after 11 p.m. The Prime Minister also urged business owners to be more considerate of residents’ need for rest.

This happems in Bolans almost every night. Goes up until sometimes 2:30am. The police vehicle runs up and down during the day but never during the nights. Life is so unfair.
Both Administrations have done a very poor job when it comes to addressing noise pollution in the entire country. The both get a failing grade, all we ever got was lip service. Who doesn’t want to comply should be dealt with severely. Sometimes babies and young children can’t get proper sleep

We are going through it here in Ottos..and more so I don’t think there was any consultation with the villagers to construct that bar..its a bar,strip club/living quarters for prostitutes…loudness of music starts from 8:45pm until 525am 7days a week the owner of the bar is very inconsiderate non approachable..we the villagers are tired so we are expecting a comprehensive solutions to this problem..thank you.
Zoning laws and strict enforcement would solve the problem. Forbid the bars, clubs etc. from operating within a certain radius of a residential area. Earmark areas within the zone for night time activities. There could be game rooms such as areas where domino, pool, table tennis, warri can be placed within the confines of a residential area and curb their opening hours if they serve alcohol.
From a health perspective, especially as a population ages, the older folk need, NEED, at least seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep at night, for the body to carry out its healing functions. Younger persons who patronize these clubs with the thumping music, you are not doing yourselves any good. Your hearing will suffer in the long run with damage possible to your ear drums.
Let us take the bull by the horns, see how the displaced bar and club owners can be accommodated and re-zone residential areas for the residents peace and quiet.

If an area is zoned residential.There should be no bars,shops,night clubs in those areas.Where I am living.It is zoned residential.Therefore,there are no commercial businesses in that area.There are no noise in that area.During July 4th and New Year Celebrations,no fireworks are allowed in my area.Those business owners should be held responsible for their behaviors,in Antigua and Barbuda.The Police need to do their duties without fear.

Ok. Enforce sound control in residential area is fine, but enforce close operations of night bars in the early night is a shoot in the leg for Antigua.
People, night life is a source of employment, is a way to keep the economy moving and growing.it is extremely important to have a night life. Our economy main income is providing SERVICES of any kind mainly focus on Tourism. If we decide to remove that, what else can bring to the table to replace that income?
Factories? Manufacturing? Guys don’t be naive, be serious. OUR main potential are Sun and Beaches. ANYTHING around that is what we must improve the services and take care of it.
We still can grow a lot but only having a few hours a day of working life is a nonsense. Our population is growing, new generation is taking over and we need to expand the Private sector a lot, create more job opportunities in the night. Tourism and even local citizens feel disappointed that there is practically no night life in Antigua.
Working during day is good. Means we need to chill out at night with friends and families. Lot of people don’t like to do party or bars, but a huge love it and you can’t be negative in this matter. We are using our money that we earn providing services during day in private places that operate in the night. More employment, more opportunities for younger population to find a full time job. Without night life we aren’t going to grow.

Police forces can send to jail lot of criminals, but is the judiciary system who treats them like babies and releases them to the streets. If you ask a Police officer, they will lock up those criminals forever, or even worse, but there is a judiciary system that with a bunch of nonsense releases well known criminals back to the streets.

Our port facility shutdown at 4 pm. How you suppose to grow with that nonsense? That is our main source of imported/exporting goods and only work for fews hours a day?
