The Antigua Beekeepers Corporative Society Ltd. in conjunction with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA) and the Ministry of Agriculture recently held a press launch to start renovations at the Beekeeper’s headquarters located in Belmont Estate.
IICA National Specialist, Craig Thomas and President of the Beekeepers Corporative, Brent Georges spearheaded this initiative which they first submitted back in 2019 and were unsuccessful but submitted it again in 2020 and were successful.
IICA secured funding from the Australian High Commission in the amount of approximately US $16,000 to refurbish the building. Renovation works will include; plumbing, electrical, and painting. Cleaning of the facility has already started in preparation for further renovation works to be done.
The goal of this initiative is to create a centralized facility for beekeepers and beekeeping operations in Antigua and Barbuda and increase the output of bee-related products, such as honey, wax, candles, lip balms, etc.
The Ministry of Agriculture plays a critical role in the development of the beekeeping sector, through advocacy and policy expansion.
Remarks were given by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Samantha Marshall, who pledged support to the initiative in seeing the development of the sector in Antigua and Barbuda.
Remarks were also delivered by the IICA representative in the Eastern Caribbean States, Mr. Gregg Rawlins, and the Deputy High Commission to Australia, H.E Casey Beath.
