A 67-year-old businesswoman is due to re-appear in court on October 1 after she was charged with receiving a 27-year-old Bolivian national for the purpose of labour exploitation.

The accused, Radica Persad is alleged to have brought the Bolivian national to the country on January 23, 2013 after promising him a job and a substantial salary.

But on his arrival here, the business woman is alleged to have taken his passport and made him work at her home and also at her business place for two years.

The man managed to escape in December 2015 and with the assistance of a non-governmental organisation was able to make a report to the Counter Trafficking Unit on January 27, last year.

Persad appeared before Magistrate Debby-Ann Bassaw, in the Arima third Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was placed on TT$200,000 (One Tt dollar=US$0.16 cents) bail.

As a condition of her bail, the businesswoman is to report to a police station in Central Trinidad every Thursday as well as surrender her passport.
