BVI to hold General Elections Next Month

A General Election will be held in this British Overseas Territory on February 25.

 The much anticipated date was announced  in the House of Assembly on Wednesday by Premier Dr. Orlando Smith, shortly after he declared the House dissolved.

Five known political organisations have declared that they will contest the upcoming poll.

They are the main political parties – the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Virgin Islands Party (VIP). 

Other parties fielding candidates are  the Progressives United and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement.

The fifth party is the newly-formed Reform Action Alliance however it has not announced any of its candidates since launching on January 1.

Last November, Governor Augustus Jaspert announced that a general election would be held earlier than scheduled based  on advice from the Premier, who decided to forego a by-election for the Fifth Electoral District.

That district  became vacant in October following the death of Representative Delores Christopher .
