A 37-year-old Jamaican national has denied smuggling US$647,000 worth of heroin into Bermuda earlier this year.

Omar Davy pleaded not guilty in Supreme Court to the importation of the drug on July 28 and possession with intent to supply.

Davy also denied wilfully obstructing customs officers by running away from the customs area at the L.F. Wade International Airport before officers could finish searching him and his luggage. It is alleged the haul was 220.88 grams of the controlled drug.

Justice Charles-Etta Simmons remanded Davy in custody until January, when he is expected to return to the court for trial.

Among other defendants appearing at Monday’s arraignments session were Katrina Burgess, 47, and her 51-year-old brother Cleveland Rogers, who are both accused of the premeditated murder of Trinidadian Marcus Gibbings 12 years ago.

Gibbings, a 32-year-old communications firm engineer, was found stabbed to death at a Devonshire parish apartment on October 26, 2006.

Gibbings, a father of two and stepfather of one, had lived in Bermuda for more than eight years.

Burgess and Rogers, who were not required to enter a plea, are expected to return to the court next month.
